Horror-on-Screen Review (by Raoul):
How hard can it be to make a sequel to such a film such as Grave Encounters without remaking the exact same film? I would say extremely hard, so hard that this one didn’t succeed, despite trying hard. The setting of the story, far from being tremendous, is interesting. It will certainly not please everyone but horror fans will have fun finding tons of references to both the first Grave Encounters but also lots of other horror classics. The story turned out to be better than expected. I was sure they were going to go for the typical “another bunch of people going back to the exact same place”, which they did, but cleverly put. There are a few inconsistencies in this far-etched plot, but they can be easily forgotten.
Once the group finally gets into the asylum, the rest is pretty predictable. The deaths are far from subtle (as the first one), but fail at being as scary as in the first Grave Encounters. This is actually the irony of that film: if you’ve seen the first part, you’ll find the action to be the exact same here, but if you haven’t, you will not understand most of the film.
Up to this point, I found the film really bad. But to my greatest surprise, the tone of the film changes in the last thirty minutes, introducing a fantastic aspect to the story that I really enjoyed. This last third of the film is great and compensates just enough for the lack of surprise, and the far-etched scenario, for me to give it a rating slightly above the average.
