Horror-on-Screen Review (by Raoul):
Watching Mutants, I was secretly really hopping for another of these modern French horror splatter such as “The Horde”, “Frontiers” or “Martyrs”, only to be disappointed. As for most modern French horror, Mutants is really graphic, with lots of blood and guts. The mutants, who in fact are zombies really, are quite well designed, gory and disgusting. The almost double personality of the victims turning into mutant is an interesting aspect of the film, and gets really stressful as you never know what to expect. Every blink of an eye may reveal a different personality of the mutant. That was great.
However the cool monsters is pretty much the only great feature of the film. The various characters could have been interesting, but dramatically lack background. Most of them actually disappear before you even have time to know them. Only the main heroine finally delivers some surprise. The story, apart from one twist here and there, is some really basic zombie survival and truly disappointed me (as does the ending).
To conclude, Mutants is a rather shallow film which, apart from a couple of interesting monsters and a good performance from Helene de Fougerolles, ends up to be rather tasteless.
