Open Grave (2013)

Open GRaveHoS rating:

  • Dylan = 7.5 / 10;
  • Eloise = 6 / 10;
  • Raoul = 6.5 / 10;

Synopsis:

A group of strangers wakes up in the middle of the woods, surrounded by dead people, and without any memories of who they are.

Horror-on-Screen Review (by Raoul):

Two years after the mediocre found footage Apollo 18, Gonzalo López-Gallego comes back to work with this horror-themed thriller. My first reaction, after finishing it, was that it is a great improvement from Apollo 18, but still not a memorable movie.

Open Grave is anther of these movies that starts without the audience having absolutely no idea of what is happening and, as always in this case, the story is slowly revealed as it goes. Even if that concept has used way too many times already, it does give a mysterious aspect to the movie, and reminds of other movies with similar opening such as Cube or Saw II for example. The exception here is that people are not locked here, and everything is happening in the open.

The clues given later on to the viewer to understand what’s happening are clever, but too scares to really keep the viewer interested. Still, the plot is not stupid and, even though you will probably guess the finish after two third of the movie, the end remains worth watching.

In conclusion, Open Grave is an interesting movie with a good story, but one that feels like it could have been better exploited to make it more suspenseful. Still one really worthy of a watch, especially since it features a great Sharlto Copley (Elysium, District 9) as the main actor.
