Horror-on-Screen Review (by Raoul):

The House of the Devil is very special in the sense that it is from 2009 but looks so much alike a 80’s horror flicks. This is probably the greatest achievement of this film for the rest did not convince me.

As in Ti West’s other films (The Innkeepers, Cabin Fever 2), there is a lot of effort put into building up a great tension, but not much actually happening in terms of action/horror. The first part is ok, the intriguing old couple, the creepy house, the strange job, etc. All this quickly gets you into the mood of the film, at which point some action is expected. That is exactly where the film fail in my opinion, as soon as the girl is left alone and weird stuffs start to occur, you’ve got almost 45 min of that girl walking in the house and nothing happening. Some could argue that it creates a heavy atmosphere, which it does, but still I found it quite cheap to play like this with the viewer and not showing anything.

At the end you have your explanation, which is ok, but still I was expecting something more special or more surprising. This end is exactly what I was expecting all along the film. My only little pleasure was the grandma who was pretty cool. So in the end mixed feeling for me, and so mixed rating too.
