Essential Tips to Keep You Fit and Fabulous This Summer

by boiron on June 18th, 2010

We hope you enjoy this post from guest blogger Dr. Shirley Madhère, a plastic surgeon in New York.

The start of summer is officially here. Warmer outdoor temperatures and higher humidity may prompt an adjustment to your usual beauty and wellness routines, so here are my six tips to help keep you holistically fit and fabulous this summer!

1. Do you work out with a heart rate monitor? If so, it may be time to change the settings. As your peak performance improves, reset your monitor to fit your “new normal” heart rate.

2. In hot and humid weather, change your facial moisturizer from creams to lighter lotions and gels. To avoid that feeling of piling too much “stuff” on your face, mix sunscreen and moisturizer between palms, then apply (and reapply as needed).

3. Whether waxing, threading, shaving or using laser hair removal, post-hair removal areas may be a bit irritated or traumatized. Try soothing with Arnicare Cream (for swelling and bruising) or Calendula Cream (for skin irritation) that has been cooled in the refrigerator.

4. Your eyes may be particularly sensitive in the summer due to seasonal allergies, sun exposure and dusty wind. Keep sterile, single-use eye drops such as Optique 1 in your wallet or clutch for soothing relief on the go.

5. Hair may often be wet in the summer, and the sun may weaken hair by damaging protein bonds. Keep hair healthy this season by using a deep conditioner twice weekly, rinsing hair immediately after swimming in salty or chlorinated water, and protecting hair with sunscreen for hair or with a bandana or head scarf.

6. Hand hygiene year-round helps to prevent colds and flu. Wash hands frequently and then protect them by applying an emollient-rich hand moisturizer.
