Colour Theory: Marsala

Happy New Year! 2015 is, among other things, the year of Marsala, the shade Pantone chose as its colour of the year. They call it a seductive colour, and although we were skeptical at first, the more we look at it, the more we like it. Marsala is a rich red-brown, with tones of plum and merlot just under the surface. It’s the colour of warm spices, classic lipstick, and covetable leather bag, at once familiar and elegant. Because of its depth, Marsala plays well with others and would be an excellent choice for a multi-coloured Fair Isle project. Of course, it’s also gorgeous on its own — perfect for that cozy sweater you’ll want to wear for years to come, or a floral-lace shawl in an unexpected colour. Here are our favourite iterations of Marsala (all gleaned from our shelves):

Marsala1. Malabrigo Rasta in Oxido
2. Flea Market Fancy in Posie (Brown), Free Spirit Fabrics Fizzy Dot (Red), Free Spirit Fabrics Designer Pinwheels (Espresso)
3. ShiBui Pebble in Chestnut, ShiBui Staccato in Rust, and Blue Sky Alpacas Melange in Cinnamon
4. DMC Floss #814, #3857, #902
5. Alta Moda Cashmere Claret
6. Buttons
7. Liberty Tana Lawn in Wilmslow Berry
8. Rowan Kidsilk Haze in Liqueur
9. Berroco Abode in Old Velvet
10. Misti Alpaca Chunky in Cinnabar
11. Classic Elite Fresco in Root Beer

How will you enjoy Marsala this year?
