Korea Day features Gangnam Style flashmob

Conference examines social and academic developments inspired by Korean Wave in the Middle East

Jerusalem, April 30 — The sudden increase in popularity of Korean culture and entertainment will be discussed and experienced during special Korea events next week at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Open to the public, the events include Korea Day (May 7) and an international conference on Korean culture (May 7-9).

May 7, 12 pm to 6 pm: Korea Day at the Hebrew University
The public are invited to a special "Korea day" featuring a variety of activities, lectures and workshops organized by the Department of East Asian Studies. Includes Korean calligraphy, traditional board games, costume workshop, Taekwondo workshop, Gangnam Style flashmob and more.

KoreaMay 7 to May 9: International Conference: The 'Miracle' Narrative of the Korean Cultural Industries — Perspectives from the Middle East
This international conference will examine how Korean popular culture is being appropriated and received in the Middle East, and the social and academic developments inspired by the Korean Wave in the Middle East and more broadly outside the markets of Asia, North America and Europe. The conference will feature researchers from Turkey and Iran, as well as an exhibition of photographs from South Korea displayed as a giant billboard 30 meters long, opening on May 7 at 4 p.m. at the Stern Gallery on the Mount Scopus campus. Topics include Korean Cinema in the Middle East and Beyond, Korea's Relations and Images in the Middle East, and The Globalization of Hallyu: Industry and Policy (note: Hallyu = Korean Wave).

Participants include Ambassador of Korea in Israel, H.E. Mr. Kim Il-Soo; Melis Behlil, Head of Radio, Television and Cinema Department at Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey; an Iranian scholar and researcher who lives in Germany; Christine Yoo,  Korean-American writer, director, producer and filmmaker; academic faculty of the Hebrew University and universities in Israel and abroad; and others.
