Who are we?

Portugal Telecom, SGPS, SA (“PT”) is the holding company of an integrated group of companies that operates in the electronic communications sector, holding the leading position in all business sectors in which it operates.
PT is committed to protecting the privacy of its customers and users of the websites of the different PT subsidiaries, having consequently drawn up this Privacy Policy in order to demonstrate its commitment and respect towards the rules of privacy and protection of personal data.
Therefore, when we mention PT in the current Privacy Policy, we mean PT SGPS, S.A. as well as each one of the companies within the PT Group and their subsidiaries.

Why this Privacy Policy?

This Privacy Policy is the result of our wish to disclose to our Customers and Users the general rules of privacy and treatment of their personal data that we collect and treat in strictest compliance with the Personal Data Protection Law.

PT complies with the best practices in terms of security and protection of personal data, having therefore approved a demanding program, capable of ensuring the protection of data made available by all those that in any way maintain relationships with this company.

In this context, PT has a Privacy Committee responsible for the implementation and verification of the Privacy Policy applicable to the PT Group as well as the definition of clear rules of treatment of personal data, ensuring that all those that entrust us with the treatment of their personal data, get a clear knowledge of the way how PT treats data and which rights they have in this matter.

The rules contained in this Privacy Policy complement the dispositions in terms of personal data contained in the contracts that customers celebrate with the PT subsidiaries, as well as the rules contained in the Terms and Conditions that regulate the offer of the different products and services, which are duly publicised in the respective websites.

Please do read this Privacy Policy carefully as, if you accessing one of our websites, the availability of your personal data implies the knowledge and acceptance of the conditions herein. In this way, when making your personal data available, you are authorizing the collection, use and disclosure of same in accordance with the rules here defined.

What does this Policy cover?

This Privacy Policy applies exclusively to the collection and treatment of personal data performed by the companies of the PT Group.

At the PT Group websites, you may find external links accessing other websites outside PT. The  placement of such links is done in good faith, so the PT Group may not be held responsible for the collection and treatment of personal data performed via such websites, or the accuracy, credibility and functionalities of websites belonging to third parties.

 Therefore, the placement of links to other websites outside the PT Group does not imply that we assume any responsibility concerning such websites, so this Privacy Policy is not applicable to such cases. We advise you consequently to read the Privacy Policies of all websites accessed by you.

What is the meaning of personal data?

When we mention personal data, we mean any information, of any nature, irrespective of the support in which it is contained, including sound and image, relative to an identified or identifiable individual.

An individual is deemed identifiable when he or she may be identified directly or indirectly, namely through a reference to an identification number or one or more specific elements of his/her physical, physiological, psychic, economic, cultural or social identity.

Who is responsible for data treatment?

The entity responsible for collecting and treating personal data is the company within the PT Group that delivers the respective service and decides within such context, the means to treat such data and the purpose of its use.

What kind of personal data do we collect?

PT, in the scope of its activity, collects and treats personal data deemed necessary to the delivery of services and/or supply of products, treating in such context data such as name, address, telephone number and email address.

Notwithstanding the compliance with the legal dispositions relative to data maintenance and transmission for investigation, detection and repression of serious felonies, PT only treats traffic and location data strictly necessary for customer billing and payment of used links.

In case of previous customer or user consent, which may be withdrawn at any moment, PT shall only treat the respective traffic and location data in the way and for the duration deemed necessary for the delivery of electronic communication services or the provision of value-added services.

When and how does PT collect your personal data?

PT collects your personal data by telephone, in writing or via its websites, upon consent. As a rule, personal data is collected when a customer subscribes one of our products or services.

Some personal data must be supplied obligatorily and in case such data is missing or insufficient, PT shall not be able to supply the required product or service. In each concrete case, PT shall inform customers about the obligatory nature of the provision of the personal data at stake.

If you are not a PT customer, your data will not be treated if you supply personal data to PT, for example if you subscribe newsletter sending in which case the rules of this Privacy Policy shall apply.

Collected personal data shall be treated by computers in strict compliance with personal data protection legislation, being stored in specific databases created for such purpose, and in no situation collected data shall be used for any purpose different from the purpose authorised by the owner of such data.

What is the purpose of treating personal data?

In general, collected personal data is used in the management of the contractual relationship, delivery of contracted services, services adaptation to customer needs and interests, information activities, marketing actions, as well as the inclusion in subscriber directories.

Personal data may also be provided for other purposes such as complaints, suggestions, diffusion of corporate information about the PT Group as well as market surveys and assessment inquiries.
When data is collected, more detailed information on the future use of such data shall be given.

For how long will we keep your personal data?

The period of time during which data shall be stored and maintained may vary in accordance with the purpose for which the information shall be treated.

In fact, there are legal requirements that oblige us to keep data for a minimum period of time. Therefore, whenever there is no specific legal requirement, data shall be stored and maintained just for the minimum necessary period of time for the purposes that caused its collection or later treatment or for the time span authorised by the National Data Protection Committee, after which it will be eliminated.

How can you access, correct or oppose the treatment of your personal data?

According to the terms of the Personal Data Protection Law, the owner of the data is granted the right of access, update, correction or elimination of his/her personal data, at all times, as well as the right to oppose the use of the data conveyed for marketing purposes, to send communications of informative nature or inclusion in directories or informative services; for this latter, you should, if it was not done at the time of the data collection, send a written request to the Privacy Committee, Rua Andrade Corvo, nº 6, 1050-009 Lisboa, or send such request by email to comite.privacidade@telecom.pt.

Which measures were adopted by PT to ensure the security of your personal data?

PT assumes the commitment to ensure the protection of the security of the personal data made available to us, having approved and implemented rigorous measures in this matter. The fulfilment of these rules constitutes an irrecusable obligation of all those who legally access them.

Taking into consideration the great concern and commitment revealed by PT in the defence of privacy issues, different security measures have been adopted, both technical and organisational, in order to protect personal data entrusted to us from its unauthorised diffusion, loss, undue use, change, treatment or access as well as any other form of illicit treatment.

Consequently, on all our websites, personal data collection forms force encrypted browser sessions and all personal data conveyed about yourself is stored securely in PT’s systems, which are located in a PT Data Centre, safeguarded by all physical ad and logical security measures deemed indispensable for the protection of your personal data.

Despite the security measures adopted by PT, we are forced to alert all Internet surfers that additional security measures should be adopted, namely ensuring the use of up-to-date PC and browser in terms of duly configured security patches, with active, antivirus and anti-spyware firewall, and certify themselves of the authenticity of accessed websites on the Internet, avoiding untrustworthy websites.

In which circumstances is there data transmission to other entities (third parties and subcontracted parties)?

PT, in the scope of its activity, may use third parties to deliver certain services. Sometimes, the delivery of such services implies the access by these entities to personal data of PT customers. When such is the case, PT takes due precaution in order to ensure that entities with access to such data are trustworthy and offer the highest guarantee at this level, which will be duly ensured through a contract signed between PT and any third party.

In this way, any entity subcontracted by PT will treat the personal data of PT’s customers on its behalf and on behalf of PT, and will be forced to adopt all technical and organisational measures in order to protect personal data from accidental or illicit destruction, accidental loss, unauthorised change, disclosure or access and from any other form of illicit treatment.

In any case, PT remains responsible for any personal data made available to us.
PT shall also be able to convey personal data to third parties, id est, entities that will use data for specific purposes outside a delivery of services to PT. Although in general customer personal data is not shared with third parties outside the PT Group, in the cases that occurrence may happen, namely by legal disposition, the customer shall be duly notified, being conveyed the identity of the destination parties and the purpose of the treatment of the data conveyed.

Legally, PT ensures at all times the possibility of the customer opposing the conveyance of data to third parties, notably for marketing purposes.

Under which circumstances do we convey your personal data?

The implementation and delivery of certain services by PT may imply the conveyance of your data to outside Portugal.

In such case, PT shall observe the applicable legal dispositions, namely the determination of the suitability of such country in what concerns personal data protection and applicable requirements for such communication.

PT shall not transmit your personal data to countries that do not offer any guarantee in terms of security and protection of the data entrusted to us.

How do we use cookies?

Cookies are small software tags stored in your computer through your browser, retaining only information relative to your preferences, not including therefore your personal data.

PT shall use cookies in order to help determine the usefulness, interest and number of accesses to its websites, enabling a faster navigation, eliminating the need to repeatedly introduce the same information. The use of cookies is normal practice in Internet websites, and most internet browsers enable a user to accept, refuse or delete cookies, namely through the selection of the right definitions in the respective browser

Cookies used by PT respect anonymity and shall not be used to collect any information of personal nature  or used for marketing purposes
