Karan Singh Tanwar: BJP (Delhi Cantt)

Profession: Full-time politician.

Education: Studied B Sc (Hons) Mathematics at Hastinapur College (now Moti Lal Nehru College), DU.

Political career: He entered student politics in DU and was elected president of south campus. He was first elected in 1993, lost the 1998 elections and was re-elected in 2003. During the emergency, he was one of the youngest persons to be jailed for 19 months. “In HT’s 1998 survey, I was the only MLA to score A+.,” said Tanwar. He claimed he has written his life to his constituency. “I must have attended the most weddings and cremations in the world. For me, my electorate is my first priority.”

Family: Wife Dr Manu Tanwar is a professor of Hindi in DU. They have a son. Kanwar’s hobbies include sports and music.

Cars: Tanwar travels in an Ambassador. “A white Ambassador with red beacon is worth more than all those luxury sedans most politicians drive today,” he said. His wife drives a Tata Indigo.
