Morwenstow
The parish of Morwenstow, (Cornish: Lannvorwenna), is situated in the Deanery of Trigg Major, and
Hundred of Stratton. It is bounded on the north by the Devon parishes of
Wellcombe and Hartland, on the east by the Devon parish of Bradworthy, on the
south by Kilkhampton, and on the west by the sea. The parish name is of English
origin: 'St Morwenna's holy place'. This most northerly parish of
Cornwall is near the Devon border and has a rocky coast with high cliffs. The
eccentric Robert Stephen
Hawker was vicar here from 1834 to 1875. He wrote many poems and hymns,
one of which is Trelawney, which is often regarded as the National Anthem of
Cornwall. He is said to have had ten cats which sometimes followed him to
church.
On the north-eastern quarter of the parish rise the rivers
Torridge and Tamar. Tourism is replacing farming as the important industry in
the area. Among the chief villages are the Churchtown, Gooseham, Woodford,
Eastcot, and Wooley.

- Anglican. The parish church is located in OS Grid Square SS2015, and is dedicated to St Morwenna. It was
appropriated by Peter Quivil, Bishop of Exeter, who died in 1291, to St
John's Hospital at Bridgewater. In a document dated 1296, the church was
referred to as an 'old and well-known structure'. Although this is a
Norman church, it clearly must have replaced an earlier Saxon structure. It
consists of a chancel, nave, and north and south aisles. The chancel is
separated from the nave by a richly-carved screen erected in 1575 at the
expense of the Kempthorne family. The arcades consist of seven arches, some of
which are semi-circular, and others pointed. They are supported on piers and
pillars, one of which bears the date 1475. The entrances to the body of the
church are via a south porch and a priest's door; the former has a fine
Norman doorway. The tower is of two stages and is finished with pinnacles; it
had four bells.
Details about the plans of the modern church are available on-line.
