The violin
The violin, or fiddle as it has been popularly called, emerged in the early 16th century in Italy and had its origins in medieval instruments that were also played with a bow. The basic construction of the violin has hardly changed since the 17th century. Initially it was considered to be an instrument of low social prestige but as early as at the beginning of the 17th century, it gained in status when it was used in contemporary opera. The violin soon assumed the role of leading instrument in the orchestra and, by the middle of the 18th century, it had become the most widely played solo instrument in Europe. Even today, violins are the leading voices in the orchestra and, since early baroque times right through to the present, practically every famous composer has created music for the violin.
