50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of H.R.H Grand Duke Jean

On 26 April 1961, Grand Duchess Charlotte exercised her constitutional right and made the Hereditary Grand Duke her Lieutenant Representative. On 12 November 1964, Grand Duchess Charlotte signed her act of abdication and passed the crown to her son, who became the eighth Luxembourg sovereign since the Grand Duchy was founded in 1815.

The reign of Grand Duke Jean is amongst the most prosperous in the history of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The sovereign contributed to the blossoming of political, economic and social life in Luxembourg, and established an unprecedented stability for the country.

Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte affirmed the dynasty’s fundamental contribution to the unity and permanency of Luxembourg. On 4 March 1998, Grand Duke Jean nominated his son Henri as his Lieutenant Representative and on 7 October 2000, Grand Duke Jean abdicated in favour of his son, who became the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
