The blacksmith
The blacksmith (maréchal-ferrant) is an artisan whose trade consists of shoeing horses and other equines and of trimming their shoes. Today, blacksmiths are involved only rarely with bovines.
A trade older than 3,000 years, the term “maréchal” comes from the ancient Frankish term of Marhskalk, which indicates a servant caring for horses. The word “maréchal” was used in two different senses: to identify the artisan charged with shoeing the horses, and to designate the person appointed to care for the horses. The word “maréchal-ferrant” was created afterwards to distinguish the two trades.
This trade requires specific knowledge, good skills (manual, observation, reflexes) and great availability.
