Breastmilk is known for having the most healthy and most complete nutrients for newborn children. New scientific research confirms day after day the numerous benefits that breastmilk has on the health of a baby. This is why providing information to mothers about breastfeeding has been a key message of the Ministry of Health.

By creating the Comité National d’Allaitement, Luxembourg joined the Innocenti Declaration of WHO and UNICEF. Through this organisation, the Grand Duchy encourages the creation of a favourable environment of awareness and support for breastfeeding, advising mothers to breastfeed their infants from birth to 6 months of age, then continuing to breastfeed with additionnal food. In addition, the Ministry of Health supports the "Baby-Friendly Hospital" initiative of UNICEF/WHO, the objective of which is to strengthen the bond between a mother and her child and to assist mothers at the beginning of their period of breastfeeding. All these steps have caused the rate and duration of breastfeeding in Luxembourg to increase considerably for several years.

In order to continue supporting this positive trend, the booklet "Breastfeeding from A to Z", created by the "Liewesufank" Initiative, has been completely revised in order to include the most recent scientific findings. This attractive new edition is more complete and is available to every woman who is pregnant or lactating. It provides helpful, valuable advice so that breastfeeding becomes, for the mother as well as her baby, a marvelous, peaceful event. World Breastfeeding Week is an event supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization and has the goal of raising public awareness, specifically among future mothers, to the issues relating to breastfeeding of the newborn.
