Synopsis

Sponsored documentary on the construction of a new cathedral in Coventry, looking at the design, building works and finished building. Also includes the service of consecration.

The film begins by showing the ruins of the old cathedral and describes the competition to design a new building, won by Basil Spence. The first stages of construction in March 1955 are shown, and the completion of the floor of the new nave. Queen Elizabeth II lays the foundation stone. The work of the stonemasons and the construction of the walls, and then the roof. The columns and the interior ceiling canopy. Jacob Epstein's statue, "St. Micheal's victory over the Devil" is placed on an exterior wall and unveiled by Lady Epstein. The stained glass baptistery window designed by John Piper. The external Chapel of Unity design, construction and features. The entrance and porch, and the features of the second external chapel, the Chapel of Christ the Servant. The design and construction of the Great West Window, conceived and etched by John Hutton. The cathedral floor. Graham Sutherland's tapestry and the features of the holy table. On the roof, the spire is placed in position by an RAF helicopter. The exterior of the completed cathedral is shown, inspected by Sir John Laing. A tour of the interior points out the features of note, including the Chapel of Christ the Servant. The consecration ceremony and service of May 25th 1962, attended by Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret is shown in detail.
