KTRU station off air, but still broadcasting online

|

As expected, KTRU/91.7, Rice University’s radio station is off the air as of 6 a.m. today.

From the KTRU.org website from April 27:

it is a sad end of an era… but we will continue to broadcast our programming over the internet and on 90.1 HD-2. so if you love listening over the air, you should go out and buy an HD radio! best buy has some options, but there are many other retailers as well. keep entering our radio giveaways too – we’ve already given away a bunch!

thanks for listening. our final days on 91.7fm have been memorable. in these final 12 or so hours, we will undoubtedly continue to rock as well. long live ktru!

The FCC approved a license transfer this month from Rice to the University of Houston, which was the end of the road for Rice’s student-run station.

Richard Bonnin, executive director of media relations at the University of Houston, told the Daily Cougar that KTRU programming will be available online:

“As I understand it, after the transfer KTRU will continue to broadcast on KPFT HD Channel 2 and online at KTRU.org,” Bonnin said.

The addition of the second radio station as KUHA 91.7 will also provide changes to UH’s other station, 88.7 KUHF. …

“The university’s plan is for a new full-time classical music station to debut on KUHA 91.7 FM, while KUHF 88.7 FM will offer full-time news and information.”
