This is such a tragic story. When are we going to learn that we can’t plop soldiers down in society and expect them to act normal? We must provide a coming-home bootcamp for them just the same as we provided bootcamp to make them into soldiers. When ¬†a civilian goes into the military, we provide a bootcamp to covert them from a normal person into a soldier. When they come out, we do nothing. Becoming a civilian again is a process and requires an extended ritual to accomplish the transition to a new state of existence. Any anthropologist worth his salt will tell you that. It isn’t just about the soldiers who become violent toward others. It’s also about veteran suicide.
I wrote this op-ed for the New York Times¬†describing in detail the solution to the problem. But of course, they didn’t publish it. None of the people who think they know how to solve this problem have a clue. What’s it going to take? I’m beginning to believe they will never learn. I firmly believe that these acts of violence and suicide are preventable. No one will listen.
