Cities all around the country are reinventing themselves. After years of population loss to the suburbs, the convenience and charm of urban living is drawing folks back to city centers. California’s capitol is one of those cities in the midst of a renaissance.
Sacramento’s revitalized R Street Corridor is 27 blocks of multi-use innovation. Once a warehouse district, the area’s historic brick buildings have been re-imagined as lofts, restaurants, nightclubs and galleries. The Art Foundry Gallery
Not only is the Art Foundry one of Sacramento’s premiere art galleries, but it’s also an actual working foundry. Guests who stop by during the city’s monthly Second Saturday Art Walk are treated to a live demonstration of bronze pouring.
And when you’re done there, it’s a brief walk to The Fox and Goose Public House, home of the best olallieberry scone you’ll ever try. Be sure to order it with Devonshire cream.
The Warehouse Artist Lofts (WAL)
One of Sacramento’s most beautiful old warehouses is being transformed into a six-story, 116-unit collection of artist lofts. The project is scheduled for completion in 2014. With ample parking and ground floor retail, the WAL promises to be the crown jewel of the R Street Corridor.
Burgers and Brew
Talk about innovative, Burgers and Brew’s clever spins on two old favorites keep customers coming back. Sure, the classic cheeseburger is outstanding, but for the more adventurous, B&B serves lamb burgers, buffalo burgers and even a smoked tofu burger.
I like the Spicy Guacamole Cheeseburger myself, but not without something to drink. Fortunately, Burgers and Brew serves 17 different beers on tap and another 50 or so in the bottle. Grab a seat out on the patio and you can watch the crowd gather for our next attraction…
The Ace of Spades
Sacramento’s hottest spot for live music, this all-ages club has capacity for 1,000 and draws the most creative musicians on tour. Recent months have seen shows from hip-hop artist Tyler the Creator, cartoon metal-masters GWAR and R&B/soul singer Johnny Craig. The venue’s killer sound system and intimate size make it a must for music fans. Don’t be surprised to meet your favorite artist walking through the crowd after his or her set.
R Street Market
This is what the new face of urban living looks like: Imagine having a private parking stall for your Spark EV along with the convenience of a major grocery store right downstairs from your loft. Also just downstairs from your sunk-in tub and your granite counters you’ll find a Greek café, a UPS store—even a masseuse. You’re going to need one after that GWAR show.
There’s so much more to visit on the R Street Corridor—the Capitol Art Center, for example—but that’s enough walking for one day. It’s time to enjoy a little driving time.
