SPN & ALEC: A Model Relationship

Several years ago, SPN president Tracie Sharp and Evergreen Freedom Foundation's then-president Bob Williams talked about getting SPN members more involved in the American Legislative Exchange Council. The purpose: to help develop model legislation.

SPN secured funding for some of its members to join ALEC; Sharp and Williams encouraged others to join and have their staff participate in ALEC's various committees. The efforts have paid off: In 2009, 22 state-focused think tanks are having a major impact. Their staff have been at the table with state legislators and other private sector members to draft model legislation. Among those at the table, one of Williams' colleagues, Amber Gunn, who is featured in the above article.

For her outstanding work, in July ALEC bestowed upon Sharp its 2009 Private Sector Member of the Year Award. Sharp asserts, "This special acknowledgement belongs to those who have put in dedicated time and energy through ALEC." Williams adds, "This is a well-deserved award. Not only have SPN members assisted legislators in drafting model legislation, they've been key in killing some proposals by ‘rent-seeking' special interests."

SPN members are encouraged to join ALEC. For more information, contact: Chaz J. Cirame, director of Corporate & Non-Profit Relations: 202-466-3800 or ccirame@alec.org.

About SPN

State Policy Network is made up of free market think tanks - at least one in every state - fighting to limit government and advance market-friendly public policy at the state and local levels. SPN and our members make the Founders' vision for the American Republic a reality as the nation's only 50-state distribution network for market-oriented public policy ideas. Our programs advance and defend American liberty and free enterprise by assisting new start-up organizations, growing existing state think tanks, recruiting talent to the think tank industry, developing strategic partnerships, and promoting the free-market state movement.
