Sucessfully Set and complete goalsWe have all heard that in order to be successful we must set goals.  We have also been led to believe that the way to accomplish our goals is through motivation and sheer will power.

This belief however sets you up for failure from the very beginning.  Motivation eventually wavers and will power can be lost no matter how hard we try to hang onto it.

Instead the secret to reaching your goals is simply commitment.  Committing to yourself to complete each individual task associated with your goal so that you can eventually complete it.

How To Set Up A Goal To Be Successful

Step One: Define Your Goals! What is it that you want to accomplish?  When do you want to have this goal completed?  Where will completing this goal take you personally or professionally?

People who have a dream but didn’t define it and turn it into a goal only have a 4% success rate of seeing their dream come true!

Defining your goals is the most important step on your road to success!  Without taking this first step all you have is an undefined dream.

Step Two: Break Down Your Goals Into Smaller Pieces.

Mini-Goals are the key to your success!

Breaking down your goals into smaller manageable chunks or mini-goals will help you move forward while keeping you feeling motivated with each successfully completed task.  Since it takes time to make changes in your life (or business) having mini-goals with specific deadlines to complete each one will help give you some structure as well as a time frame for completing each task.

Celebrate the progress you make along the way.  By creating your mini-goals and then celebrating your accomplishments you prove to yourself over and over that you can complete your goals.  Giving you the drive to keep going.

Step Three: Remove The Small Barriers. Typically it’s the small fixable things that trip us up.  For example: working late at night in front of the TV can distract you and steal your productivity causing you to miss deadlines.  Instead of making excuses like not having enough quite time to work, fix the problem.  Turn off the TV and get to work.

Step Four: Keep Your Focus Stay FocusedThis may be the most important step, aside from defining your goals.  Stay focused on your mini-goals and the commitment you made to yourself.

The mini-goals that you created in step two is your plan of action.  You should focus on completing each mini-goal before moving to the next.  Step by step as each one is completed you will move closer to obtaining your goal.  It’s that simple.

Fallowing these four simple steps will increase your chances of reaching the goals you have set for yourself in the months and years to come.

What goals have you set for yourself this year that you could apply these steps to?

Great tips for people setting large goals this year! I tried to break down my goal of debt repayment into smaller chunks by aiming to pay off a chunk of my debt this year to really get the ball rolling but obviously my long term goals is to pay the whole balance off. I think creating a budget with a reasonable timeline and holding myself accountable each month are great ways to remove the barriers.

I think those are all great goals and suggestions as well. I think that by breaking down large debts into smaller manageable pieces that are easier to pay off quickly keeps you/us motivated to keep going and pay off more until it is paid in full.

Thanks Michelle! I think limiting spending is a good goal, it is one we need to work on as well. Good luck with your goal!

These are aome great tips! I always shudder when people say they don’t set goals, because they never accomplish them. You absolutely have to set mini steps and rewards if you are going to accomplish anything. :)

I agree, if you don’t set goals and create an action plan you will never accomplish anything. It’s your goals that gives you direction and your mini goals that gets you there.
