Adelaide Assasins AWIHL 2010 League Champions

In a fifth year running the Adelaide Assassins once again claimed the title as League Champions of the 2010 AWIHL (Australian Women's Ice Hockey League) in front of a home Adelaide crowd at the Adelaide Ice Arena.

Commencing in October 2009, four teams - the Adelaide Assassins, Sydney Sirens, Melbourne Dragons and Brisbane Goannas competed for playoff ranking. After 12 regular season games the first semi-final game had the 2nd place Sydney Sirens take on 3rd place Melbourne Dragons and the second semi-final had the 1st place Adelaide Assassins take on the 4th place Brisbane Goannas.

Sydney Sirens, Rachel White led the way in a closely contested game before a packed house with a 3 goal performance to give the Sirens a 4 - 3 overtime victory over the Dragons and a berth in the finals. The first period remained scoreless. Dragons Lucy Parrington found the mark in the 2nd period to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead after two. Sirens Rachel White unleashed a counter attack in the 3rd with a two goal performance within a minute of each other to give the Sirens a 2 - 1 lead. Dragons Parrington and Emily Ward replied with one each to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead. Team mate Shona Green assisted on all three goals. A minute later Sirens Anna Ruuth found the twine to tie the game and send it into a 5-minute sudden death overtime. With less than a minute remaining, White and Katherine McOnie combined to send the Sirens to the final game with a game ending 4 -3 score. Sirens Sera Dogramaci was 24 for 3 and against Dragons Tara Woods 30 for 4.

The Goannas were no match for the Assassins in Semi-final 2 as Assassins Bethanie Kavanagh launched a crusade with 3 goals & 3 assists to give the Assassins a 6 - 2 win over the Goannas and a berth against arch rivals Sydney Sirens the next day for the 2010 League Championship. Andrea Steranko assisted with 2 goals and 2 assists. Kelly Costa and Teresa Moriarty scored the Goannas two lone goals. Assassins Belinda James faced 13 shots for 2 goals and Goannas Sheryn Gillin faced 22 shots for 6 goals.

In the consolation finals Parrington and Green gave the Dragons a 6 - 3 win over the Goannas with Parrington recording a hat trick and Green notching two. Olivia Dawson scored the single. Tamra Jones scored and Teresa Moriarty a single for the Goannas 3 goals.

Before a packed house Belinda James and the Assassins launched a major 39 to 16 shot attack on the Sirens to record a 6 - 0 uncontested win for the League Championship. Tash Farrier led the way with a 2 goal and 2 assist performance supplemented by a 2 goal performance from Andrea Steranko. Bethanie Kavanagh and Diana Glass recorded the singles.

After a well deserved rest, the majority of the players will be completing preparations for a March exhibition series tour of Southern Alberta to complete the season and prepare for the 2011 ASWIHL followed by the IIHF 2011 World Senior Women's Championships.
