According to the Houston Chronicle's, Unreal Backlog of Immigration Cases Crowd Dockets, the Houston Immigration Court's case volume has increased from 4,723 in 2009 to 12,280 at the end fiscal year 2012, an increase of 160%.
This increase in case volume has led to longer wait times from 298 days in 2009 to 453 days in 2012 for an individual to have his day in court. For some who may not have an immediate relief from removal available in immigration court, this is a blessing as they are permitted to remain in the United States while their cases remain pending. For others, it is a painful wait to have their relief from removal decided by the immigration judge. And worse, for those who are in detention, the wait may become unbearable and they throw up their arms and decide to give up.
