HB349 & SB688 change the school start date requirement from no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day to 21 days before Labor Day. Additionally, the bills remove the exemption that currently allows Academically High Performing School Districts to begin earlier than law allows. Reasons stated for allowing schools to start three weeks before Labor Day is so schools can end the first semester before the winter break. Florida law already allows the first semester to end before the winter break and school districts currently have total control as to how they schedule the required instructional hours each year. This bill is not needed to meet the alleged goal. Send an email now!
