With the dust barely settled on the largest snow sports event ever seen in New Zealand, the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ 2013 has been hailed as the best World Cup event on the international circuit by leading governing body officials.

The Federation International de Ski (FIS) sanctions all World Cup events around the globe, including the six that made up this year’s Winter Games NZ. F
IS Race Director, Roberto Moresi of Italy, said this year’s event delivered the best World Cup events in the world saying it was the best organised event overall, delivered by “totally competent and friendly local officials who work as an amazing team” and with excellent facilities. He also added that Winter Games NZ CEO, Arthur Klap, “does an incredibly good job”.

This opinion was backed up by FIS Technical Delegate, Peter Krogoll (Germany) who said the event was “flawless” and the Swedish coach, Patrick Nyberg, who declared Winter Games NZ “the best World Cup the team has ever been to”.

At the Closing Ceremony in Lake Wanaka, Head Coach of the US Olympic Snowboarding and Freeskiing Teams, Mike Jankowski, said the United States team loves coming to Wanaka and competing and training at Cardrona. “The people are so friendly and welcoming, it’s a beautiful area and we love the competitions. The organisers run a great World Cup for our athletes and we plan to come back for further training.” Jankowski was accepting the Winter Games NZ Nations Cup following the US topping the medal table during the Games.

Arthur Klap is delighted the feedback to the Games is so positive. “As an organising team we’ve had to work exceptionally hard through these Games to deliver the best events that we could so it is especially pleasing to get such glowing reviews from the FIS officials here at the Games,” he said. “It gives us the confidence to now move into the planning phase for 2015 and 2017 and lift the quality and profile of the Games even further.”

Winter Games NZ 2013 took place from 15-25 August at Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort and Snow Farm, along with the Maniototo Curling International Rink, involving over 750 of the world’s elite winter sports athletes. Set against the spectacular backdrop of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, the Games also included a full Downtown Sessions festival programme featuring films, live music and entertainment in Queenstown and Lake Wanaka.

Cardrona’s Olympic halfpipe was packed with hundreds of spectators this morning as Kelly Clark from the USA and Japan’s Ayumu Hirano opened their FIS World Cup seasons with huge wins at the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ 2013. This was Clark’s 61st career win but Hirano’s first appearance at an FIS World Cup event, at the age of just 14.

Kelly Clark, the most successful snowboarder of al
l time – male or female – and 2002 Winter Olympic gold medallist, ended the women’s series of first runs eleventh out of twelve after failing to land one huge trick. But like a true champion she took the title dropping in last with her second run. Her score of 89.50 edged out China’s Cai Xuetong who took silver with 85.50 after winning her earlier semi-final, while American Gretchen Bleiler hung in there for bronze with the highest first run score of 85.25.

New Zealand’s Bex Sinclair performed well in the earlier semi-finals, finishing sixth from ten and earning valuable qualification points for next February’s Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, even though she just missed out on a place in the final.

Clark’s run featured a frontside air, backside 540 mute, frontside 1080 lien, cab 720 mute, frontside stalefish. She said she was unfazed after a disappointing first run.

“You think of it as an opportunity. It’s easy to have things not go right and all of a sudden change your plans. For me it’s more important to be internally motivated, to stick to the plan regardless of what goes on around me. Today I thought, well hey, this is exactly what can happen at the Olympics – it is what happened to me at the Olympics last time! I just thought I could be conservative today and go for a podium finish, or I could rally and think of it as an opportunity and that’s exactly what I was able to do,” she said.

Ayumu Hirano used his awesome speed to land some of the biggest jumps ever seen in Cardrona’s halfpipe. His first run score of 92.25 was only threatened by teammate Taku Hiraoka’s second run which included the first 1260 in this year’s comp but was still only good enough for silver, scoring 91.75. Swiss rider Christian Haller was delighted to spoil a Japanese whitewash, edging out Ayumu Nedefuji for bronze with his second run of 82.50.

Hirano’s winning run started with a backside tail into frontside 1080 double cork tail, cab 1080 mute, frontside 1080 double cork and cab 720 indy.

Looking slightly stunned by his maiden World Cup victory he said: “I was aiming to be on the podium in this competition so I’m really happy about being in first place. This is my first World Cup and I still need to compete well this season to qualify for the Japanese team.”

Head judge, Ola Sundekvist signed off the snowboard events at this year’s Audi quattro Winter Games NZ: “I’m so happy that we got through the finals and we have a result. We got some really good riding in the finals and I’m so happy with the results. The pipe is excellent, it was a little windy and we could see that some people had issues with the wind but overall it was a really good competition.”

US women now have the chance to make a clean sweep of Winter Games NZ 2013’s freestyle events at tomorrow’s snowboard slopestyle final. Clark’s compatriots Devin Logan and Jamie Anderson have already taken out the freeski halfpipe and snowboard slopestyle comps respectively.

The Audi quattro Winter Games NZ 2013 sports programme concludes tomorrow (Sunday) with the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup Slopestyle at Cardrona. The Downtown Sessions festival concludes in Queenstown with the Adventure Film Festival presented by Auckland Airport’s ‘Best of the Fest’ special showing at the Lotto Village Queenstown and the final race of the Winter Games NZ cyclocross series at Wynyard Freestyle Mountain Bike Park, Fernhill. Over in Wanaka, the official closing ceremony begins at 2pm at the Lotto Village on Ardmore Street and is followed by the JUCY Meltdown Concert at the Lake Wanaka Centre when NZ band, Tahuna Breaks bring the Games to a stomping close. Tickets available from the Lotto Villages in both towns.

US athletes shone brightly under blue skies at Cardrona today in FIS Snowboard Halfpipe World Cup qualifying. On day eight of the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ, Kelly Clark and Gregory Bretz took out their heats and fellow Americans made up five out of the 16 automatic qualifiers for Saturday’s final.

Liu Jiayu of China won the other women’s heat with a score of 91.0 – just one point le
ss than the score with which Clark won hers – and goes straight into the final with Gretchen Bleiler (USA), Arielle Gold (USA), Holly Crawford (AUS), Nadja Purtschert (SUI), Yuki Furihata (JPN) and Queralt Castellet (SPA).

Other men’s heat winner, Japan’s Ayumu Hirano will be happy to sit out the men’s semi alongside compatriots Taku Hiraoka and Ayumu Nedefuji plus Arthur Longo (USA), Nathan Johnstone (AUS), Christian Haller (SUI) and Tayler Gold (USA).

Speaking before heading up to watch the men’s heats, Kelly Clark – a gold and bronze medal-winning Winter Olympian – said she’d only been able to have four training runs before today due to poor visibility on Cardrona’s Olympic halfpipe.

“The pipe is so good and this is a great field. I’m really happy the weather cleared which made it possible to come out and land some good runs. For the final I’ll be doing a totally different run but playing to my strengths to keep it clean and big. Making it through was the name of the game today and I’m really excited about the final,” she said.

Those facing an intense semi-final competition include Switzerland’s Iouri ‘I-Pod’ Podladtchikov in the men’s comp and New Zealand women’s number one, Bex Sinclair for whom this was a first competition since knee surgery. She said she was ‘super happy’ with two consistent runs as she aims for Winter Olympic qualification.

“I came in just hoping to land a first run back in competition, and I landed both my safety and step-up runs. I’ve worked so hard in rehab, doing everything I had to do to get back to form. For the semi I’ll pretty much use my step-up run but go bigger and cleaner. No matter what happens, I’ve already got a chunk of Olympic qualifying points in the first comp of the season,” she said.

Head judge, Ola Sundekvist was very pleased with the day’s events: “So finally, we got it! We’ve had sunshine and perfect conditions. The only thing missing was a couple of days extra training and then we could have seen some insane runs, so hopefully we’ll have some great semi-finals and some super-great finals on Saturday.”

The Audi quattro Winter Games NZ 2013 continues tomorrow (Friday) with the second of two IPC Alpine Slalom World Cups at Coronet Peak, qualifying heats for the FIS Freestyle Skiing Slopestyle World Cup at Cardrona and semi-finals and medal games at Winter Games NZ’s elite curling tournament in Naseby. The Downtown Sessions festival continues with the Adventure Film Festival presented by Auckland Airport at Reading Cinema, Queenstown and Cinema Paradiso, Wanaka plus two drive-in movies at Remarkables Park, Queenstown and continuing entertainment, live music and medal ceremonies at the Lotto Villages in both towns.
