Hall of Heroes E-Books
are a new feature in our site, designed to meet the needs reflected in many of the e-mails
and other requests we have received. They are designed to give you an attractive
resource booklet for personal use or for distribution to others. (E-Books also made
a nice, economical gift.) Booklets are listed TOPICALLY on our LIST PAGE.
Several booklets of similar topics may be combined into a single large volume. (For
example, we have individual e-books listing Medal of Honor recipients by ethnic
heritage. Rather than printing each individual booklet, you may wish to combine them
all into one large BOOK.) |
E-Books are printed from a menu of
pages like the example shown at the right. This gives you the ability to customize
your E-Book by printing only the pages you want. |

Each link in the menu
opens a web page in a separate window, that will print as a SINGLE page on your
printer. There are no banners, ads, or hyperlinks on the e-book page you open.
In most cases, the e-book menu will include a cover page you can print for your
booklet.
PRINTING OPTIONS:
1)
You can also scroll directly through the pages by clicking on an icon that looks
like this:
2) If you are a frequent visitor or wish to
print in large quantities, we have built in an easy one-step process we call the E-Book
Publisher. This NEW feature is a little more complicated but well worth
learning if you print a lot of our E-Books. For information on how to use our E-Book
Publisher feature, contact our webmaster
for a brief tutorial.

Hall of Heroes E-Books were created to provide
people like YOU with the information they want, in an attractive booklet format to be
proud of. None of these pages are covered by copyright -- everything is designed to
be freely shared. You may feel free to print as many pages as you want, arrange them
in any order, compile pages from different E-books into single or separate volumes, and
even print multiple copies for distribution. The following are the only
limitations we place on the re-use of these pages:
- E-books or individual E-book pages may NOT
be sold. If you print multiple copies to share with other people, share them as
freely as we have shared them with you.
- When printing multiple copies for distribution to others, with
the exception of the cover, E-book pages may NOT
be altered. Footnotes, comments, or other information (such as a reunion roster,
company information, etc.) should be added to your E-book as an appendix, and identified
as pages included by YOU as an addendum to the e-book.
- E-book pages MAY
be included as inserts or addendum to other booklets, notebooks, or handouts, so long as
the parent volume is not sold as a commercial item.
For additional questions regarding re-use, e-mail
us at: E-Books.

Q: Why does each e-book have to be printed from a table of many different
links?
In order to assure that the pages of your e-book are not
broken up improperly due to differences in printers and browsers, we have created each
individual page separately. This means that you print the pages one-at-a-time, and
we can be reasonably certain that each page will print properly without
"run-ons".
Q: Why does each linked page open in a SEPARATE window?
There are NO LINKS for navigation on an e-book page, so they
MUST be linked to from the menu. By opening each page in a separate window, you can
view/print each page without leaving the menu page or having to press the BACK button.
(After viewing/printing a page, make sure you close the window to return to the
menu.)
Q: Why does my printer cut off some of the information on a page?
E-book pages are set up in tables to insure proper sizing for
printing. You may need to adjust the margins in your printer options. (See
PRINTER OPTIONS in the HELPS section below.)
Q: Why is there an empty box at the bottom of most e-book covers?
The empty box at the bottom of the cover allows you to
customize the cover. If an organization is printing multiple copies for
distribution, they can put their name, event, date, etc. in the box. You can also
use it to create a personalized GIFT (by inserting something like "To My Father on
Veterans Day").
Q: How do I customize the cover (add text in the empty box)?
There are two ways you can accomplish this, depending on your
computer and the software you have.
- Download the cover to your computer, open it in a graphics
program, add the text you want, and then print. (You do not need a graphics program
to do this, many word processing programs such as MS Word work well.)
- Print the covers directly from our web site, then create the
text you want in a text or graphics program (aligning it to fit within the area of the
white box on the printed covers, and then "over-print" on your existing covers.
Q: Why does the cover take so long to download?
To provide an attractive, quality cover for your E-Books,
they are prepared as .jpg files in a size that will fill the front page. This makes
them a large image file, that may take a minute or two to completely download.

- Our E-Book pages look nice not only stapled together in a booklet format, but
also displayed as POSTERS on a wall or in a frame. Use your imagination to create
displays you can be proud of.
- After collating the pages of an E-Book, you can have it COMB-BOUND at many local
businesses (PIP, Office Max, etc.) for about $1 @. When doing this, consider adding
a clear plastic sheet to the front and a blank sheet of paper and clear plastic back.b
- Print the cover on a quality, photo or card stock of paper.
- Give personalized E-Books at gatherings and reunions. (For example, a
reunion of veterans of the 173d Infantry Brigade might print an E-Book of 173d Infantry
MOH recipients, note the event and date on the cover, and distribute them to all
attendees. (You could do such a booklet at a cost of about ten cents each stapled,
$1.25 @ with a nice comb binding and plastic cover.)
- Include E-Book pages in handouts, programs, or notebooks used for special
events, seminars, or presentations.

PRINTER SETTINGS: All E-Book pages are designed to print as a
single, whole page. This may necessitate three adjustments:
- Adjust your print margins. If
your pages get "cut-off", you may need to change your page margins. We
recommend using the lowest allowable margin, .50" (though many will default to
.46" on the bottom margin). To adjust the margins, before printing a page go to
FILE on the menu bar at the top of your browser, select PAGE SETUP from the drop down
menu, and change your margin settings.
- Tell your printer to print only ONE page. Often,
though your E-book page will print properly on one page, your printer will follow with a
blank page (due to a final RETURN) in the document. This is no big deal, you can
re-use the blank paper. To avoid this however, especially when doing multiple copies
of each page, instead of clicking the printer ICON, print from the PRINT option under FILE
in the MENU bar, selecting the radio button to print "Page 1 of 1".
- Set your printer preferences NOT to print the PAGE
TITLE (header) and URL (footer). This procedure may vary depending on your
browser and version. Usually you can instruct your printer NOT to print these by
insuring the the HEADER and FOOTER text boxes (Under the PAGE SETUP option) are BLANK.
If this doesn't work, use your browser's HELP menu.
