Perhaps you think that you’ve heard enough about these bits and pieces that are all contributing to help the world of academia research at a faster rate. Scholarly journals and academic contributions are being produced faster than ever, and with collaborative tools being made to assist academics, the growth shows no signs of slowing.

Since the beginning of the Information Age, finding the best way for researchers to collaborate became a research project itself. And it’s not just about the immediate live contribution. For example, how easy will it be for people to edit my academic journal while still maintaining its purpose and accuracy?

Despite the struggle to find this solution, Authorea might have the answer. Collaborating on a scholarly article can be done from multiple entities without hindering the active communication between the contributors. Essentially, you can get write what you want, and nobody is going to end up writing something entirely off-topic (it sucks when you’re working on a scholarly journal, and your colleague accidentally writes a romantic novelette). They achieve this by making the chat notification easily noticeable next to the section you’re contributing on.

The most important thing to know about Authorea is that it uses a system very similar to GitHub. The author can track contribution times and changes, and create a folder collection of the research involved. Likewise, you’ll begin to notice, the system feels more suitable for Authorea than it does for GitHub. It’s like GitHub put tight shoes on big feet, where Authorea found the right size of shoes. The entire user experience properly combines the important aspects of scholarly journals with the right collaboration tools. Furthermore, a documentation of scholarly articles is kept, so the site also acts as a huge academic database.

While the site is just starting, they have successfully created a feedback system to try to sharpen their user experience. They are not ignorant of the requests the users provide in this system either. The top voted request (as of the time this article was written) was responded to, and a method of adding citations from the web to the bibliography was implemented. The way Authorea is headed is very optimistic.

Authorea has found the right way to mix collaboration with written research articles. The founders saw that the system of GitHub could best be implemented with a way of collaborating scholarly articles. So far, there is no direction but forward that Authorea seems to be headed in.
