Coconut Oil Lip Balm Recipe – Homemade lip balm is easy to make! All you need is a few ingredients and a double boiler. Check out this nourishing non-toxic recipe made with coconut oil, beeswax and olive oil!

How to Make Coconut Lip Balm

Have you ever made lip balm before? Homemade lip balm is one of the easiest cosmetics you can make. It took me less than 5 minutes to make this!

My 3-year-old daughter has been fascinated with makeup lately. She loves to rub sparkle gel over her skin and is always sneaking into her play makeup she got for her birthday (I didn’t buy it for her). I honestly prefer her not to wear any of her play makeup because it isn’t good for her! Many makeup products contain phthalates, which are toxic and linked to reproductive abnormalities.

Keeping it natural is the way to go! Now, when my little 3-year-old wants to be a little glamorous I can pull out this lip balm and let her go to town.

Homemade Coconut Oil Lip Balm

Equipment

  • Double boiler (or saucepan and glass bowl)
  • Stirring utensil

Ingredients

*The red palm oil adds a little orange/red color to the lip balm while the olive oil leaves the lip balm a faint yellow color.

 Directions

  1. Heat coconut oil, beeswax and red palm oil or olive oil together in double boiler over low heat.
  2. Melt oils and wax together.
  3. Mix mixture well and pour into storage container.
  4. Let cool before using.

Question of the day: Have you ever made your own makeup? Did you like it? I’m thinking I may explore more into making different cosmetics using natural ingredients! :)

What a fabulously simple recipe! I’m looking forward to trying it out. I’m wondering about adding essential oils. Do you have a recommendation on an amount?
    Thanks for the great recipe!

I’ve added a touch of peppermint EO to my lip balms. I also infused alkanet, an herb, to tint the balm red. (dont forget to strain the alkanet)

Do you know of any substitutes for beeswax to which I am highly allergic? Thank you.

      You can use soy wax.

I added a little Shea butter to my last batch to give it staying power. And ALWAYS add 1 to 3 drops of Young Living essential oils like Peppermint for a “plumping” tingle effect or Thieves or Orange ;) A friend of mine bought some “candy flavored drops @ Michael’s recently but I’m not sure how toxic those would be :(

Question..I saw a stick of beeswax at Ace Hardware the other day. It said it was great for many uses. I wonder if this beeswax would be okay to use to make lip balm? TIA!

@Rachel B maybe soy wax? Use he same amount as you would beeswax. Or maybe Candelilla wax? Which you would use only about half the amount as you would beeswax.

I do everything homemade except shampoo and conditioner. My hair just hasn’t taken to the homemade things I’ve tried so far. This lip balm looks great!

Loretta E. » My hair doesn’t do too well on homemade shampoo either! I’m still on the look for something that will work for me.

I have made my own before but I will try this. It has less ingredients than the one I previously made. I was wondering if I could add cosmetic coloring to it? I think it would make a nice lip gloss.

Success! Today was my first try at making something natural and this recipe was awesome and easy! The clean up was the worse part but wiping with papertowel, then oil ,then boiling water, then soapy water did the trick. Question, what is the shelf life of this lip balm? Also, I found that 1 TBS = 1/2 oz. of beeswax, for those wondering. Thank you! My natural journey has just begun!

What is the size of the container you used? And does this lipbalm recipe set hard enough to use chapstick tubes? Thanks!

I wouldn’t recommend using palm oil since the majority of it comes from deforestation in Indonesia, which has killed and relocated thousands of orangutans. (and other intelligent species)

I will use beeswax and coconut oil though. :-)

    Hi,
I was wondering if this recipe would allow for natural powdered fruit flavors to be added and maybe what quantity considering it’s a dry ingredient?? Thanks :)

I have a question. Can you use Mica to color this to make it tinted?
