The field exercise for assessment of wildlife in Goa  commenced yesterday. The census exercise conducted once in 4 years is undertaken by the Forest Department, Goa. The data generated from this exercise will help in assessing the distribution of tigers, co-predators and prey. 

Acting on the direction of National Green Tribunal (NGT) Indore Development Authority (IDA) finally started census of tree from Scheme no. 134 on Wednesday.

The last tree census was conducted in 2008, where 19 lakh trees were taken into account in an area of 605 km.

Stage is set for the  All India Tiger  Census  a quadrennial event  where not only   tigers are counted even other carnivores and herbivores in   parks along with habitat is surveyed. Though  state tiger project officers survey tigers every year , this is  a National a Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) sponsored  survey where    whole habitat   surveyed  

This year the census will be carried for six days and during this period the volunteers will be provided with lodging and boarding facilities by the department.

Dates of census will be announced   by the chief wild life warden on Tuesday at Bangalore an official source disclosed to TOI. 

Though   department was all set to start tiger census   in the last week of October , it has decided to   take up the census in December . Officials of  wild life and tiger sanctuaries in the state who met here decided to start complete it in six days

Contrary to  reports of   poor response from  volunteers to take up   tiger census   in tiger reserves and reserved forest areas in the state , wild life department   is said to be receiving   good response and almost   450 youths have got registered   to assist the department in   census work.
