Leading strength and conditioning coach Alex Benson of Proactive Performance has customized a workout program to help athletes improve their strength. It’s that simple. Our strength bundle will force you to hit new maxes on all major lifts to become a stronger fitter you. Follow this program to see strength gains and improve your 1RMs across Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift.

Important notes from Coach Benson:
"The aim of this program is to increase strength -  the main focus of each session will be the second lift of the day, which will be either Squat, Bench Press or Deadlift. For these lifts you will need to have established your 1 Rep Max for each lift to be able to work out the percentages for each lift as shown in the program. To establish your 1 Rep Max you should work down to a heavy single that can be completed with good technique. You should always use an experienced spotter when completing 1RM lifts.

Another option, which is arguably safer and more effective when spotters aren't available is to lift a weight you know from experience you can perform 5 or so reps with and then go for a max reps set - i.e. lifting the weight as many times as possible to technical failure. Use the weight lifted and reps completed in the following formula below to establish an estimated 1RM:

Weight x Reps x 0.033 + Weight. For example 100 x 6 x 0.033 + 100 = 120 - Therefore estimating a 120kg 1RM.


In week 1 you will complete 5x5 reps at 80% of 1RM; Week 2 5x3 reps at 90%; Week 3 you will work down to a heavy single, with the aim being to beat your previous max. You will then start back at week 1 lifting 80% of your new 1RM.

Remember! Any increase is good - even it is only 1kg, as long as you are progressing be positive! For example if you add 2kg per cycle, you will have added over 30kg per lift in a year - think long term!"

Alex is the co-owner and coach at Hull's Proactive Performance strength and conditioning facility. Alex's interest in S&C hails from a professional sporting career in Rugby League, playing for clubs such as Hull FC, Doncaster and York before turning his hand to coaching. He holds a degree in Sports Science and is a qualified PT, Weightlifting Coach and Tutor/Assessor. Alongside the coaching at Proactive Performance he also delivers fitness industry training qualifications through FitUK Training & Education.
