Considered to be the oldest active opposition party, it began as the Singapore extension of Malaya's UMNO, the chief party of Alliance Party Malaya and later Barisan Nasional, which dominates Malaysian politics until today. Similar to its counterpart across the Causeway, Singapore UMNO allied with the local branches of MCA and MIC. On 19 March 1967, it was renamed PKMS after a new legislation was passed in December 1966 forbidding local parties from being affiliated to foreign ones. The new name was approved by the government on 3 May 1967. Presently a member party of SDA, it continues to maintain links with UMNO Malaysia. In recent years, it has been derailed by rampant infighting.
