PRETERIST UNIVERSALISM | MODERN PRETERISM | PRETERIST IDEALISM

Prof. Benjamin Jowett
(1817-1893)

Essays on the Interpretation of Scripture
(1860)

(On Romans 13:11)
"In the New Testament we find no exhortation grounded on the shortness of life. It seems as if the end of life had no practical importance for the first believers, because it would surely be anticipated by the day of the Lord" (Rom. xiii.11)

(On Hermeneutics | 'Double Fulfillment' Theory)
'First, it may be laid down that Scripture has one meaning, -the meaning which it had to the mind of the prophet or evangelist who first uttered or wrote to the hearers or readers who first received it.'

'Scripture, like other books, has one meaning, which is to be gathered from itself, without reference to the adaptations of fathers or divines, and without regard to a priori notions about its nature and origin.'

'The office of the interpreter is not to add another [interpretation], but to recover the original one : the meaning, that is, of the words as they struck on the ears or flashed before the eyes of those who first heard and read them.' (Essay on the Interpretation of Scripture, § i. 3, 4.)

Solution to Rev. l3:l8 is NEBEKEDNESSER, that is, the Greek letters: Nu (50) + Eta (8) + Beta (2) + Eta (8) + Kappa (20) + Eta (8) + Dela (4) + Nu (50) + Eta (8) + Sigma (200) + Sigma (200) + Eta (8) + Rho (l00) = 666. The variant 6l6 is: Kaisar Theos (Lord God). My reasons for these solutions are: l) The Jewish HOUSE OF JESUS (See SEPTUAGINT, Ezra 2:36) was captive/exiled in 6th century b.c. Babylon. 2) The Book of Daniel 4:l6 mentions that God gave Nebuchadnezzer the mind of a beast for refusing to acknowledge the Lordship of the King of Heaven. 3) The 2nd century b.c. apocryphal work titled JUDITH refers variously to Nebuchadnezzer as: "Lord of the whole world", "Who is God except Nebuchadnezzer", "All nations shall call upon Nebuchadnezzer as God." 4) The lst century a.d. New Testament letter titled FIRST PETER at 5:l3 alludes to the Jewish HOUSE OF JESUS in the following covert and clandestine manner: "Greetings from her who dwells in Babylon . . ." (The New English Bible). 5) Midrash Rabbah Ecclesiastes mentions that the Roman emperor Trajan was "A descendant of Nebuchadnezzer" (presumably, in a typological sense!). 6) Midrash Rabbah Canticles refers to Rome as "ROME-BABYLON." 7) The spelling for Nebuchadnezzer in THE SEPTUAGINT dates from the 2nd century b.c. at the earliest while the Jewish HOUSE OF JESUS was in 6th century b.c. Babylon. [Walter C. Cambra, A.A.,B.A.,B.A.,M.A.,(FRC)(MAFA)]

Quoted by ARthur John Gossip in The Inerpreters Bible, Volume 8, page 751, "As a measure of the value of such disputes, which above all other interests seem to have for a time the power of absorbing men’s minds and rousing their passions, we may carry our thoughts onward to the invisible world, and there behold, as in a glass, the great theological teachers of past ages, who have anathematized each other in their lives, resting together in the communion of the same Lord." (Quoted from Theological Writings, ed. Lewis Campbell (John Murray, 1902), page 94.
