Canada’s Mark McMorris has defended his Gold medal title in Slopestyle with the highest ever score in X Games Slopestyle history. The 19 year old from Regina was able to earn an impressive 98.00 in the first North American 6Star event on the World Snowboard Tour this season. McMorris executed an impressive display on the upper rail setup and then landed a cab 1260 double cork to a front 1080 do uble cork to a double wildcat backside. His last jump was a triple cork 1440 that seemed to be no less than flawless.

“I came here to do the run I wanted to and was able to pull it off, so I’m really stoked, “ he said. McMorris, who won silver in last night’s big air event, not only walked away with a gold tonight but also 1000 World Snowboard Tour points.

Second place went to fellow Canadian, 18 year old Max Parrot who’s run scored an impressive 90 points. His first jump was a cab double 900 and then a front 1080 double on the second jump to a double walk out on the third. His last jump was a huge back triple 1440. Parrot’s second place finish also bumped him up into second place in the World Snowboard Tour’s Slopestyle rankings.

Seppe Smits from Belgium landed a very clean run including a triple cork. Smits had some issues with his triple on the last feature that forced him to revert, but it was still good enough to land him on the podium in third.

Her run included a backside 180 to a cab 720 to a massive switch backside 540. “It just feels so good”, said Anderson about her win, “ I’m so happy to be here with a healthy body and a healthy mind.” Anderson’s win helped her move into fifth place in the Women’s overall World Snowboard Tour rankings.

Sarka Pancochova, the 22 year old Czech a scored a 90 to put her into second place. Pancochova landed a very clean backside 720 on the last jump of the course that help her boost her score. This is the first X Games medal for the Czech athlete.

In third was Spencer O’Brien out of British Columbia, Canada. O’Brien was having issues in both practice and during competition, but was able to land a run with a memorable cab 540. It was a double cork popping fest in Finland this weekend, where Boris Mouton (FRA) took center stage with a massive Backside 1080 double cork mute grab and got the huge local crowd to go wild. Fins Janne Korpi and Kalle Järvilehto followed him to the podium rounding up a long day full of double cork attempts where at times it was hard to find the sweet spot landing. Janne deserved his second pla ce with a beautiful Backside 1260 Mute grab. ‘’It is only my second year in World Snowboard Tour contests, and it is my second time participating in a big event – to win here – I am just so stoked!’’

18 riders came to the start gate for qualification today, and we saw 12 riders advance to the final. Results varied constantly, with Fins and foreigners taking turns grabbing the high score. Not an easy ride for the judges, the rider field stayed pretty close together with their respective performances. From qualification to final, all riders started to feel much more at home on the massive kicker in the Lahti stadium and became more fluid, warming up the crowd for the best yet to come.

‘’In the beginning of the day the course to me was pretty sketchy, but during the day it grew on me and it all worked out cool.’’ Boris Mouton said.

Antoine Truchon, who came to Finland positioned number one on the World Snowboard Tour Big Air ranking, was disappointed with his performance, but defended his spot fiercely and is still reigning the Big Air ranking.

Kalle Järviletho moved up into 2nd position with his 3rd place result today. Boris Mouton moved up to 11th place.

Next week, the World Snowboard Tour Big Air final takes place, at the last 6Star event of this season, the Billabong Air&Style; in Innsbruck Austria. This crème de la crème event is promised to be gripping till the last run, and here we will see who is going to grab the 2013 trophy.

The first Official day of X Games Aspen 17 has wrapped up and has set the tone for this weekend’s Men’s Slopestyle and Superpipe finals. This is the first year that X Games has been a part of the Word Snowboard Tour and it is the first 6Star event in North America this season. Judging by the action in the past few days of training and today's Qualifications, this 6Star event will have the world's attention for the days to come. The day started with last year’s Slopestyle gold medalist Mark McMorris laying down a run that looked effortless yet was one of the more technical runs of the day. Superpipe superstar Shaun White again took to the Slopestyle course and was able to qualify in 7th place putting him in the finals. White was seen practicing a triple cork during slopestyle practice, though he did not perform this during the qualification event, it may be a prelude of things to come during Saturday's final. If White decides to perform a triple cork during his finals run, other athletes may be forced to do the same to grab the top spot.

McMorris, who is well know for the triple cork 1440 he performed in competition last year during X Games had some insightful words about the trick, “I never wanted to see the triple in Slopestyle, but these jumps are big enough and if they are going to be done they will be most likely be done at this event.” He said. We will find out on Saturday what these eight athletes have been planning, and see who will be standing on the podium.

1. Mark McMorris 806 Regina, Saskatchewan, CAN 88.66
2. Peetu Piiroinen 809 Hyvinkaa, FIN 81.33
3. Max Parrot 808 Bromont, Quebec, CAN 75.66
4. Seppe Smits 811 Westmalle, BEL 72.00
5. Chas Guldemond 802 Reno, NV 70.00
6. Aleksander Oestreng 807 Rykkinn, NOR 68.66
7. Shaun White 814 Carlsbad, CA 67.33
8. Gjermund Braaten 801 Oslo, NOR 62.00

The evening brought us an amazing show of talent in the Snowmass Superpipe. Huge crowds flocked to the venue to see the men compete for the eight final spots, including crowd favorite Shaun White. White put down an amazing run and was sitting in first place for most of the competition. In the end it was not White who qualified first but Iouri Podladtchikov who came out on top with a lead of only .33 over White’s 87.00. White was last years halfpipe winner with a perfect score.

1. Iouri Podladtchikov 834 Zurich, SUI 87.33
2. Shaun White 814 Carlsbad, CA 87.00
3. Scotty Lago 831 Seabrook, NH 82.66

Today’s 11th Red Bull Nanshan Open Finals unfortunately had to be altered due to constant snowfall causing speed issues for all riders involved. After Juuso Laivisto suffered an injury in the first round, the decision was made to call the 5Star World Snowboard Tour Finals off and a plan B was created for the afternoon.

This didn’t stop the rider’s itch to put on a show, and after agr
eeing to let yesterday’s Qualifier results stand the first 11th Red Bull Nanshan Open Super Method-Off & Rail-Jam Bonus Round was created! The qualified riders would be judged on their best method grab off the first kicker, a knuckle trick on the second kicker table and ‘choose-your-line’ on the jib section – battling for a mini-prize pool of $6,000. The local crowd and up to 1.6 billion live TV viewers were treated to an awesome display of methods, each rider showing their individual style – a nice contrast to the dizzying spins of yesterday’s runs! At the end of the day it was the competition’s youngest rider Darcy Sharpe (CAN) who threw down the most judge-pleasing run for a first place finish. The 16-year old must still have that youth-flexibility, with by far the highest and most tweaked-out method of the day off the big kicker, finishing it off with a half-cab to backside 360-off on the up-pipe and a back 270 on, 270 out on the down rail. Norwegians Sondre Tiller and Brage Richenberg finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Based off of yesterday’s results, Jeremy Thompson finishes the 11th Red Bull Nanshan Open Men’s division in first place, with the injured Juuso Laivisto clinching second and Sondre Tiller in third. The riders now get to celebrate in style with a big night of karaoke before getting whisked off to enjoy a snow-covered Great Wall and enjoying some proper Beijing nightlife! Ganbei!
