KATHMANDU, APR 12 - President Ram Baran Yadav appointed “singing nun” Ani Choying Drolma as Unicef Nepal’s first national ambassador on Friday.

As an ambassador, Drolma will be a public voice against violence against children and adolescents. According to the UN agency, around 1.6 million children work as child labourers in the country and 5,000 live on the streets.

Unicef Nepal representative Hanaa Singer said that the singer’s popularity and status as a dignified personality will aid in sending the message that children’s welfare is of high priority.

Drolma too promised to use her celebrity and experience to bring the issues of children to the forefront. “I will use my songs to improve the situation of children nationwide,” said Drolma, who also runs a school for nuns.

The singer joins the ranks of English footballer David Beckham, Indian actor Amitabh Bachhan, Chinese actor Jackie Chan, Colombian pop singer Shakira, who are also the Unicef ambassadors for their respective countries.
