Moggi cleared of two counts of sporting fraud in final Calciopoli verdict

Luciano Moggi Juventus

The final verdict of the 2006 scandal saw former general director cleared of two sporting frauds.

The match-fixing scandal, which broke out in 2006, saw Juventus stripped of the 2004/05 and 2005/06 titles in addition to being demoted to Serie B, with both AC Milan and Fiorentina receiving eight and 15 point deductions.

The 77-year-old had received a life ban from football and sentenced to two years and four months in prison for his involvement in the scandal, though the sentence was suspended.

Now, the Supreme Court’s verdict cleared Moggi of two accusations of sporting fraud,  as well as being cleared of conspiracy to commit a crime alongside former Juventus sporting director , as the claim went beyond the statute of limitations.

The public prosecutor’s request to clear charges against former referees Paolo Bertini, Antonio Dattilo, and Gennaro Mazzei was accepted, whilst Massimo De Santis and Savaltore Racabulto’s appeals were rejected.

It was also concluded that there was a system in place aimed at altering the results of Serie A.

“The 77-year-old had received a life ban from football and served two years and four months in prison” – sensationalist click-baiting at its finest!! Moggi has never gone to prison for the charges on him – it was a suspended sentence….

    THIS:

“The Court of Appeal turned down Moggi’s case that he should be acquitted of his sentence for two years and four months over attempting to influence the choice of referees.

Nonetheless, the disgraced director will not see any jail-time as the sentence is ruled to have gone beyond the statute of limitations, an option that is contemplated by Italian law for certain crimes.”
