Eight-year-old Jahari Ward, nicknamed "Buddah," is still hospitalized at Dayton Children's and being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. Sources say it seems he will pull through.
Ward, along with his sister Jakia Jones, and their cousins Dionanna and Dejah Bishop, were found unresponsive in their South Elm Street home on Friday, February 27. Troy firefighters said there was a large amount of carbon monoxide inside the home that had been leaking from a faulty gas furnace for several days.
Both Bishop girls were pronounced dead at Upper Valley Medical Center shortly after they were pulled from the house by paramedics.
Jakia Jones was flown to Dayton Children's Hospital along with Jahari, but Jones passed away on Sunday, March 1.
"We got a call saying the kids were sick and grandma was at the hospital, so he went to check on the kids," said Brittany McCrea.
Her longtime boyfriend, Leon Bishop, was the guardian of the kids and called 9-1-1 when he found them inside the Elm Street Home.
"Those girls were his babies, too," McCrea said. She also lived with the four kids for a few months during the time she and Bishop have been dating.
McCrea said she was amazed at the news Jahari was making progress and his health was improving as of Monday, March 2.
"Oh I was crying, it's a blessing!" Said Elm Street neighbor Sandra Banks.
Reporter Kelly May spoke to Banks after arriving home from a visit to Jahari's hospital room.
"He was moving his fingers and toes, and when people were talking to him he was moving his eyes in their direction," said Banks.
"I know that boy is going to walk out of the hospital," McCrea said. "He's going to walk out with the same personality he came in there with."
McCrea also had positive news to share out of the death of Jakia Jones.
After she passed, her organs were donated.
"Jakia saved three people," McCrea said. "So even though she's not here, she's still here."
"It's sad," said Banks, "but to have Buddha with us, yeah that's alright!"
McCrea said the children's grandmother, Jean Bishop, is still being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after being hospitalized the night before the kids were found. She will not be moving back into the Elm Street home when she is released.
Donations to help for funeral costs can be made at Wright-Patt Credit Union member centers under the name Jean Bishop.
McCrea also started a GoFundme page.
