Purina has called the lawsuit 'baseless' but thousands of pet owners feel differently
The O'Reilly family's dog died a violent death on Monday (March 4, 2015) and they believe Beneful is to blame.
"I woke up and she was just gone. She was just gone. It's just been hell since then. Trying to figure out what to do. Trying to figure out how to do anything at all," Yellow Springs' Babs O'Reilly explained from her home Wednesday.
On February 20th Babs ran out of food and grabbed what she could in a rush at a corner store.
"I picked up a bag of Beneful because I thought that's always been good food," O'Reilly explained.
A few days later a Facebook post about the massive class action suit against the dog food brand caught the mom of three's attention.
"I took her off of it. And that was a Friday and on Sunday her seizures started," O'Reilly said. "She couldn't breathe, she couldn't eat, she couldn't drink."
The O'Reilly's say their vet could only tell them the dog was having an allergic reaction - but to what they couldn't be sure.
"They put here on an iv flush and they did blood tests and all they could find was that her liver was working overtime," O'Reilly added. "Her symptoms are identical to what's going on to animals all over the country."
“The only change was the dog food. That was it. This is real. I never imagined that we would go through this. That Jessie...the look in her eyes. She was scared.”
Purina released the following statement last week:
"We believe the lawsuit is baseless, and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves and our brand. Beneful is backed by Purina's strict quality controls and comprehensive food safety program."
