Third and final series of the set of postage stamps depicting 16th century drawings by Abbot Jean Bertels of Echternach. The drawings can be found in the "Grand Bertels" kept in the National Archives in Luxembourg.

The drawings of Jean Bertels cover a number of towns in the region, as seen by this Renaissance man who was so interested in history, but who, as a service to future historians, also recorded the events of his own time. Even the most mundane scenes often sparked his interest.

Bertels himself formed this desire to provide material for future generations in a manuscript dated 1598 where he wrote: "Nichil dignius, nibil honorabillius quam quod scriptis ad posteros mittitur." (There is nothing more dignified or more honorable than information that is passed along in writing to those who follow.)

What is true for the written word is even more true for images. The work of Ioannes Bertelius Grudius, his Latinized name, gives us an objective overview, sometimes embellished with surprising details, of everyday life in the rural regions of our country towards the end of the 16th century and is considered to be one of the most authentic testimonials of its time.
