How to: Obtain genomic sequence for/near a gene, marker, transcript or protein

Starting with...

A GENE NAME OR SYMBOL

  1. Search Gene. If you know the gene symbol and species, enter them as follows: tpo[sym] AND human[orgn].
  2. Open the desired record.
  3. Follow these directions: Gene FAQ.

A SEQUENCE ACCESSION NUMBER (e.g. NM_001126)

  1. Search Nucleotide or Protein with the accession number.
  2. Follow the link to Gene and proceed as above, or follow the link to Map Viewer.
  3. In Map Viewer use the Download/View Sequence/Evidence link and adjust the coordinates as desired.

AN mRNA OR PROTEIN SEQUENCE

  1. Follow an organism-specific link from the BLAST Assembled Genomes section of the BLAST home page.
  2. Link to the Map Viewer from your search results and download as above.
  3. For more information, see the Map Viewer Help.

A GENETIC MARKER NAME

  1. Search Map Viewer with the marker name.
  2. Once in Map Viewer, zoom to the desired region and click the Download/View Sequence/Evidence link.
  3. For more information, see the Map Viewer Help.

THE SEQUENCE OF A GENETIC MARKER

  1. Search the BLAST nucleotide database, dbsts.
  2. Search Probe with the top hit.
  3. In the Mapping Information section of the Probe record, follow the link to Map Viewer.
  4. Alternatively, search a BLAST Assembled Genome, follow a BLAST results link into the Map Viewer and click the Download/View Sequence/Evidence link.

A CYTOGENETIC BAND POSITION OR A CHROMOSOME BASE PAIR POSITION

  1. Go to the Map Viewer page and open the search page for your organism.
  2. Select the desired chromosome.
  3. Enter the band or base pair positions in the Region Shown boxes and click Go.
  4. Click the Download/View Sequence/Evidence link.
