GUEST POST by Sierra Brashear of SoulVibrance.com
The ancient wisdom of women does not lie. As we dive deeper into the mysteries of our femininity, we discover the secrets that lie within the knowledge of generations before us. Yet many of the rituals and remedies of our great grandmothers are not secrets at all…they have simply been forgotten.
One such elapsed remedy is the ancient practice of vaginal steaming, or yoni steam. The sacred practice of honoring and treating our precious yonis with herbal steam was still around at the beginning of the 20th century, even in America. Yet, today vaginal steaming is mostly unknown to the women in our so-called modern culture. The time has come for this wildly beneficial practice to be revived by women across the globe, because we as women are ready to heal and pamper ourselves, just as our ancestors always have.
Used by traditional healers across the globe, the ancient remedy of vaginal steaming is thought to cleanse and revive the uterus, resulting in easier, more effective cycles of the female body. Women from the Korean and Mayan cultures are among those who have carried this ancient tradition forward, referring to the vaginal steam as a chai-yok or a bajo. Dr. Rosita Arvigo will tell you that, in fact, doing a bajo is as common and useful of a remedy in Belize and Guatemala today as drinking peppermint tea is in America.
While there may be no scientific studies to prove it, the timeless wisdom of women has shown vaginal steaming to be effective support for the female system from menarche to menopause. This simple home treatment is known to help reduce pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation, regulate irregular or absent cycles, increase fertility, and speed healing in the postpartum period. It is also known to treat aspects of abnormal uterine pathology such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse and endometriosis. In addition, many women steam their vaginas to treat chronic vaginal or yeast infections, as well as to support detoxification of the entire body. Perhaps best of all, vaginal steaming comforts and relaxes the mind and body, reducing anxiety and inviting in an enhanced sense of wellbeing. Women share their success stories among one another, and science is none the wiser.
I believe its time for every woman to remember how to do this sacred women’s remedy for herself. From woman to woman, I invite you to take in this wisdom and use it to transform your own experience of your beautiful body. To do a vaginal steam at home:
- Steep one heaping cup dry yoni steaming herbs (like Sierra’s custom blend: rosemary, mugwort, motherwort, yarrow, partridge Berry, calendula, lavender, and rose petals) in a 2-quart pot of hot water for 10 minutes with the lid on. Remove from heat and place in a metal basin. Allow to cool slightly, ensuring steam is not hot enough to cause a burn.
- Remove your clothing from the waste down, and find a quiet place to relax with the steam below your bottom (try a yoni steam chair, or place the basin inside a clean toilet bowl). Stay wrapped in warm blankets as you sit above the steam. This is a great time to meditate, set intentions, and write down all the reasons you are grateful to be a woman!
- After 20-40 minutes, lie down in a warm bed for the night. As you sleep, the herbs will continue to work on your reproductive system.
- Wake up feeling relaxed, joyful and pampered! Your next period will likely be much thicker and darker, however, after just a few steams you will notice your periods changing, becoming more comfortable.
For best results, steam two to three times in the week before you expect your period to begin. Please do not steam while menstruating, or if there is any chance you may be pregnant.
I believe it’s time for women everywhere to re-discover the beauty of our own bodies, to celebrate our miraculous systems, and to begin to understand the gifts the Earth has given us to treat ourselves. We steam our yonis in celebration of our wild femininity, and in honor of a deeper exploration of the wisdom and ritual of our cycles.
Vaginal steaming is back, and this time, its here to stay.
