Showbiz Highlights of 2013

Bilal Lashari’s Waar is the most anticipated and hyped Pakistani film, which was also a hit at the local box office, is the highest rated feature film of 2013, according to Internet movie database. The movie was given a rating of 9.1 out of 10 in a polling based on more than 10,000 users rating, ranking above films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Gravity. It is worth mentioning here that Indian film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag reached at a position of number eight. Bilal Lashari, the director of the film excitedly expressed his emotions that it was not just a reaction to a film, but a show of immense love and support from proud fellow Pakistanis and a new beginning for our national cinema. Waar was released on 42 screens in all over Pakistan and set a new record of box office collection pertaining to Eid openings after a first day opening of Rs. 11.4 million the big budget flick earned a total of Rs. 42.6 million within a week breaking all previous records of Eid collections.

She was buried in Shehanshah Graveyard, Karim Block, Allama Iqbal Town Lahore.

Neelo Begum – Knee Surgery
NeeloFormer film actress and mother of actor Shan, Neelo Begum had undergone a knee surgery in Lahore. After initial recovery she was shifted from hospital to her house. Due to her increasing weight she had developed this ailment but now she is improving after this operation. mpaopS prays for her speedy recovery.

Dismissal of petition against exhibition of Indian films by Lahore High Court

According to the lawyers, the Film Producers Association and Cinema Owners Association had reached an agreement under which 50 per cent Pakistani cinemas would exhibit only local films and the professionals associated with the national film industry would benefit from the income generated from exhibition of local films. Moreover both parties (cinema owners and film producers) would take steps against illegal exhibition of Indian films. The petitioner, Mubashar Luqman, a private television show host, had told the court that he hoped the issue of smuggled Indian films would be resolved in term of the agreement reached between cinema owners and film producers. He told the court that he wanted to withdraw the petition. He said he would file a fresh petition against exhibition of Indian soap operas, advertisements, stage shows, game shows and other Indian programmes in Pakistan. Justice Muhammad Khalid Mahmood Khan recorded the statements and disposed of the petitions as withdrawn. On the other hand former film director had protested the withdrawal decision of Mubashar Luqman.

The program was organized by his lifetime companion Tufail Akhtar Dada, Sughra Sadaf (PILAC) and Rana Naveed Ahmed. Aizaz Ahmed Azer performed the duties of stage secretary of the tribute ceremony. Writer Pervez Kaleem, Actress Bahar, Bushra Rehman (Writer, columnist and politician), Baba Muhammad Yahya Khan, Pervez Rahi, Almas Bobby, Tufail Akhtar paid their humble tribute to one of the pioneers of film Journalism in Pakistan. Family members of Yasin Gorija, Khursheed Alam (Writer) and many more attended the function and during the function Pervez Rahi was awarded with life Achievement Award. Zinda Bhaag – Nominates for Oscar

Zinda-BhaagThe Pakistani Academy Selection Committee has selected Zinda Bhaag as the first Pakistani film in over fifty years to be submitted for Oscar consideration in the ‘Foreign Language Film Award’ category at the 86th Academy Awards. Three other films like Chambeli, Josh and Lamha were also submitted to the committee and Zinda Bhaad was selected as mentioned. It is worth mentioning in 1959, Jago Hua Savera by Director A.J. Kardar and Ghunghat by Director Khawaja Khurshid Anwar was submitted in 1963 but neither film secured an Oscar nomination.

Naheed Akhtar Comeback

It is worth mentioning that she gave up professional singing in 1991 at the start of her matrimonial life with Asif Ali Pota. TV actress Ayesha Sana hosted the show, video clips of her film songs and those she sang on television were screened. while TV and film artists performed on some of her famous songs. Hamid Ali Khan, Shabnam Majeed and Saima Jahan sang the popular film songs of Naheed Akhtar. On the request of audience she promised and announced her comeback in singing world.

A S AfaqiA pleasing night to pay a tribute to living legend writer, Journalist, producer and director Ali Sufiyan Afaqi was organized at Al-Hamra cultural complex by Pakistan Film & TV Journalists Association. A large number of showbiz personality with journalist attended the function. Being a journalist’s show many showbiz related journalists arrived from Karachi to attend the function, particularly Aslam Ilyas Rashidi the curator of weekly film newspaper NigarMustafa Qureshi the living legend himself performed as stage secretary. Habib, Zeba, Amjad Islam Amjad, Syed Noor, Aslam Dar, Pervez Kalim, Zareen Panna, Shheeba Butt, Athar Javed Sufi, Khalid Ibrahim, Tufail Akhtar, Sajid Yazdani, Mazhar, Ramzan, Mirza Iftikhar Bair, Liaqat Moughal, Abdul Wasih Qureshi, Rashid Latif, Jarar Rizvi and Adil Ibrahim were also invited the function. Amongst said personalities mostly came on the stage and paid their appreciation to the chief guest. During her gratitude Zeba Ali said that once I was fourteen I saw Afaqi sahib, today I am above sixty but he is as he used to be.

Ban on Indian Films release in PAF Cinemas

October 2012

Pakistan Air Force has imposed ban on release of Indian films in PAF Cinemas. On the other hand cinema contractor has submitted application against this decision with the plea that since Pakistani films are not being produced regularly so cinema business would be badly affected with this ban. It is worth mentioning that previously there were forty (40) PAF cinemas in Pakistan but with the fall of cinema business in Pakistan there are only four PAF cinemas, presently working and these are PAF Cinema Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Sargodha (Shaheen). Being located in posh areas only Hollywood and Bollywood films are being released on these cinemas. PAF authorities have passed the instructions to all base commanders to implement this ban forthwith. In reaction to this order, Cinema contractors have closed and stopped releasing of any of the films.
