Nepal earthquake: More than 4,000 dead as rescue efforts continue

Rescue efforts in Nepal are continuing after a deadly earthquake killed more than 4,000 people, making it the country's worst earthquake disaster in over 80 years.

Other developments include:

  • 90 British and Irish people are still missing in Nepal following the disaster, according the Red Cross
  • At least 17 people were killed on Mount Everest, with many more - including some Britons - stranded
  • International aid to the affected region has been prevented by flights being unable to land and huge traffic jams on the roads out of Kathmandu

Oxfam prepares to fly disaster specialists to Nepal

A team of Oxfam technical experts carrying equipment to help purify water and provide sanitation are preparing to fly out to Nepal in the wake of today's earthquake.

In a statement, Cecilia Keizer, Oxfam's director in Nepal, said that telephone lines are currently down, while electricity and water have both been cut off.

!Many of the old houses have been destroyed and at least one large apartment block has come down in Kathmandu," she said.

"People are gathered in their thousands in open spaces and are scared as there have been several aftershocks."
