Wednesday night, two women who were supposed to be caring for those children were charged. The video evidence against the two women was hard to argue against. It apparently shows the women struck the children multiple times before another worker came into the room.
The children’s mother wanted to know how long the abuse had been happening.
Police said Stachya Powell approached a 1-year-old who was on the floor. She hit him six times, then grabbed him by the arm and tossed him to the ground.
Thirty minutes later, police said J'moni Bonner walked in the room and eventually struck three children, a 1-year-old, 3-year-old and 4-year-old. All three were siblings and their mother, Tatiana Mance, found out three days after her kids were beaten.
"I was shocked. I'm like, did this really happen? Why did this happen to my kids? You just don't expect something like that to be shown to you," said Mance.
Eventually, the 1-year-old got the worst of it; another slap to the back of the head. Mance said she didn't know how long the abuse had been going on, but feared the video did not capture the first time.
Jamica Thomas, owner of ACCS Learning Center, said, "You got to be comfortable to do this in front of cameras. You got to be comfortable, they were doing it like it was nothing new to them."
Thomas said both Bonner and Powell were fired immediately after the video was reviewed and police were brought in on the situation. “That's my worst nightmare, as a day care, that is my worst nightmare to have something happen to a child put in my care,” Thomas told Local 12.
Thomas said Bonner denied the allegations until she was shown the video evidence. But, Thomas claimed Powell had a different take on what happened. "She didn't seem remorseful at all for what she had done. Her response, she said it was Friday, I guess it was a bad day."
Thomas said she reviews the surveillance video frequently. She said she fired people before for being on a cell phone during work but said she's never seen anything like this before.
