The Yammp distribution consists of a compressed tar archive, this contains binary executables for SGI MIPS IRIX 5.3 and 6.X only. Click on ympdist.tar.gz to download (posted on September 27, 1999). This is a 604,864 byte file.(If this link does not work correctly, please read this note which will appear in a separate window). You should have a file named ympdist.tar.gz and you can then unpack it using the following command:

gzcat ympdist.tar.gz | tar -xof -

If your browser is properly set up, it will have already expanded the archive and you will have a file named ympdist.tar. Unpack the file using the following command:

tar -xof ympdist.tar.gz

In either case this creates a directory ympdist containing the distribution files (and therefore you should not have a file or directory named ympdist before you enter either of these commands).

Installation

If you have Perl installed on your system you can go ahead and install yammp:

cd ympdist; ./instymp

The installation script is called instymp which will ask only one question, the directory in which you want yammp to be installed (the yammp directory). You will be given a chance to back out before any permanent changes are made. After the installation you can delete ympdist. Each user of yammp needs to add the yammp directory to his or her path - the exact procedure differs from site to site so we cannot offer any specific instructions but see these general notes.

Removal

Yammp can be removed by typing:

./instymp -remove

You will be asked for the directory in which Yammp was previously installed. You will be given a chance to back out before files are actually removed.

Manual Installation

If you do not have Perl on your system you need to manually install the programs. The script instymp which is a text file contains detailed numbered instructions; you can ignore the program and follow the comments. Or follow these steps:

1. Unzip and untar as above.
2. Decide on a destination directory, e.g., /usr/local/bin.
3. In ympdist/ympscript/ edit each file and substitute _FULL_BIN_PATH_ with this directory. There is only one occurence of this string and it is near the top of the file. Note, use a full pathname (i.e., /a/b/c and not a/b/c) and do not end the name with a slash (i.e., /a/b/c and not /a/b/c/).
4. Copy everything in ympdist/ympscript and ympdist/ympbin to the destination directory.
5. Add the destination directory to your path.

You need write permission to the destination directory of course.

Yammp uses the Mike Carson's Ribbons package for graphical display. This is available to academic users at nominal cost and to other users at a very reasonable price. You can get Ribbons here.
