XENOGRAPH is a 292-page, 12½″H × 9½″W hardcover, clothbound book collecting paintings, drawings, digital works, and preliminary sketches of work created between 2010 and 2014. It will pick up where REBUS left off and contain a seven-page gatefold that will unfurl to feature panoramic compositions on each side. Of note, it will collect the complete series of obsessive and surreal ballpoint pen and ink drawings done in my sketchbook during this period.

The first printing of XENOGRAPH will be limited to 3,000 copies, with a special box edition of only 250 copies that will contain a letterpress print created exclusively for this release.

The book is fully designed, the materials have been chosen, and it is ready to go. It will be printed on FSC-certified paper and bound domestically in the USA.

Though I’ve had success working with large publishers before, I wanted to try a more direct approach with XENOGRAPH. With your help, I will be able to control the production and quality of the book more closely, distribute it faster, and keep the cost lower without compromising on materials and techniques. Pre-orders at this early stage would greatly decrease the risk and significant capital required to publish a high-quality art book.

As an incentive, all pre-orders will contain a newly designed bookplate, signed and numbered, made especially for early patrons.

This crowdfunding campaign will begin May 5, 2015, at 8:00 a.m. PDT and end May 31, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. PDT. After the campaign ends, we will immediately go to press and plan to ship copies directly to patrons in September.

Updates on the production process will be posted on Instagram, Facebook,  and Twitter.

James Jean’s art is supple, fluid, and full of grace. Redolent of baroque friezes but tinged with lysergic abandon, his compositions are meticulously planned and yet supple and alive. His mastery of form and color connects him to deeper roots than pop culture and suffuses his images with emotion and immediacy.
