CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois football graduate assistant Jason Verduzco is joining the Washington Redskins coaching staff, the organization announced today.
Verduzco, who served as defensive graduate assistant for Illinois since 1997, accepted an offensive assistant position on the staff of Redskins head coach Norv Turner. Turner is the older brother of Illinois head coach Ron Turner.
"I am very excited for Jason," Illinois' Turner said. "Jason has worked very hard for three years to get to this position. I spoke with Norv and Jason is exactly what they need. They both look forward to working together in the future. I think Jason will do a great job and get some valuable experience with the Redskins."
"I feel very honored that Coach (Ron) Turner would recommend me to his brother, " Verduzco said. "I have been fortunate enough to work with under some great coaches who have had similar values and beliefs both on and off the field. It has been a goal of mine to work in the NFL."
Verduzco, a two-time All-Big Ten quarterback for the Fighting Illini, guided Illinois to 20 victories and three consecutive Bowl appearances. He threw for 7,532 yards and 42 touchdowns.
After his illustrious career at Illinois, Verduzco went on to play one season for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League. He then coached quarterbacks, kickers and served as recruiting coordinator at Hamilton College for three years prior to returning to Illinois.
