The Take

A back-to-back runner up plays on its home court against a Final Four newcomer led by the winningest coach in Euroleague history in the second semifinal at the 2015 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. It is the first match between Rela Madrid and Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul in three years, and Madrid holds 9-3 all-time edge in meetings between them. Fenerbahce's head of bench Zeljko Obradovic guided Real Madrid from 1994 to 1997 and took the club to the most recent of its eight Euroleague titles in 1995. That marked the third of what has become a record eight Euroleague crowns Obradovic, too. Now, Coach Pablo Laso, who was a Madrid guard under Obradovic in the mid 1990s, aims to lead his club to its third consecutive championship game appearance. Last season's MVP Sergio Rodriguez and Sergio Llull are the playmaking duo that runs the show, set the high-tempo offense Madrid likes to play, and feeds the wings where sharpshooter Jaycee Carroll and swingman Rudy Fernandez have an array of ways to punish opposing defenses. But Fenerbahce's veteran point guard Nikos Zisis is great at changing the rhythm and pace to his team's liking and returns to the city and arena where he already won a Euroleague title with CSKA Moscow in 2008. Young and talented Kenan Sipahi and Rising Star Trophy winner Bogdan Bogdanovic will back Zisis up in the absence of Ricky Hickman, who is out for the season with an Achilles injury. Bogdanovic will mostly play at the small forward spot and alongside scoring machine Andrew Goudelock to form a lethal scoring tandem. K.C. Rivers and Jonas Maciulis add to Madrid's depth at the small forward position, which could be crucial against do-it-all forwards Nemanja Bjelica and Emir Preldzic, whose versatility and ability to create offense takes Fenerbahce's game to another level. Bjelica will also spend a lot of minutes playing down low against Madrid's experienced 35-year old power forwards Andres Nocioni and Felipe Reyes. Meanwhile, Marcus Slaughter, Gustavo Ayon and Ioannis Bourousis have all the size, power and athleticism in the paint, but they meet their match in a big, strong and deep Fenerbahce frontcourt, which starts with high-flying Jan Vesely, and continues with Luka Zoric, Semih Erden and Oguz Savas to complete a mouth-watering matchup at Barclaycard Center.
