Trying to Make Heads or Tails of the 'Return to Sender' Trailer Starring Rosamund Pike

The plot for the upcoming thriller Return to Sender says it's about a nurse (Rosamund Pike) living in small town goes on a blind date with a man who is not the person he says he is. Okay, so let's start with that...

In the trailer we see Pike talking with her friend (Rumer Willis) who asks her about the "big night", which we then learn is a date with her husband's co-worker, Kevin (Billy Slaughter). However, she doesn't appear to even remember she's having the date and when "Kevin" shows up, for what is a blind date (suggesting she doesn't know what he even looks like), she lets this guy in and proceeds to get raped. Kevin shows up and then... well, and then I can't really tell.

From what I'm trying to piece together, Shiloh Fernandez plays the guy that raped her, with whom she appears to soon develop some sort of romantic relationship, all to the chagrin of her father (Nick Nolte). The title, however, would suggest she's returning his letters from prison unread... dun dun dun. I don't know, there's obviously some sort of twist here, but I'm too bored to try and figure it out.

Clearly Pike is working her Gone Girl thing once again, and quite satisfactorily as far as I can tell, but it would appear there is only so much heavy lifting that can be done on her part to generate much enthusiasm in me for this one.

If you can sort this out any better than me, please, have at it in the comments below. Return to Sender hits UK theaters on May 22, no U.S. release is currently planned.

I saw the headline and pic and thought it was a comedy...

I totally thought it was a comedy. That screencap is gold.

Yep. The trailer seems to give away quite a bit of the plot, leaving us only with the mystery of the twist that sure to come. And yes, it seems we've got Gone Girl lite.

This looks to me like one of those "rape and revenge films", Brad. The romantic relationship you talk about is a ruse, and she's writing, stalking, and harassing him while he's in jail. When she asks how the food is, she wants him to think he's going to get poisoned. He's going to spend his time in jail as paranoid and traumatized as she was after she was raped.

If they wanted to go full Gone Girl, they should have done what they did in the trailers and only show the first half. All thrillers should only show the first half with maybe a brief glimpse of the final half. Probably won't bother with this until I can see it for free somewhere

Looks like a terrible movie with a good performance. Really poor trailer too - it gives away the whole movie whilst also confusing everyone.

I agree on the poor trailer-part, but to say it gives away the whole movie is ridiculous statement. Have you seen it yet? Let's wait for that.

Well it gives away a ton of the plot.. I can't imagine there is much more to the film unless it's even more convoluted than it appears.

Ms. Pike is becoming the face of the sub genre in movies called "women you don't want to fuck with."
