U.K. Box Office: 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Scores Biggest Superhero-Movie Opening

It always was going to take something heroic to knock Furious 7 from its perch after three weeks at the top of the U.K. box office, and Avengers: Age of Ultron lived up to its early promise.

In its opening weekend, the superhero sequel smashed its way to the top, beating a Hulk-sized haul of records along the way.

Its initial box-office revenue of $27.3 million in Britain saw it overtake Fifty Shades of Grey as 2015’s biggest U.K. opening, in the process becoming Marvel's biggest opening in Britain, the biggest superhero opening of all time, the biggest April opening of all time and the eighth-biggest debut overall in recorded U.K. box-office history.

The $9.4 million it took on Saturday alone wasn’t just Disney’s best single day for any film in the U.K., but also the best single day for a superhero movie.

The first Avengers film debuted in Britain in 2012 with $23.9 million, going on to earn $78.6 million. Age of Ultron looks like it likely will pass that amount with ease.
