U.s. Clears Rep. Hastert In House Banking Scandal

September 15, 1992

YORKVILLE — Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was added Monday to the list of House members cleared of any wrongdoing in the House bank scandal.

Eight Illinois congressmen were among some 70 notified last week by a Justice Department special counsel that there was no reason to believe they had committed any crime in overdrawing their accounts. The list was expanded to 145 Monday, and more are expected to be added.

Hastert, who lives in Yorkville, had 44 overdrafts during the period under investigation. The bank has been closed since the scandal became public.
