"Public apology and £5K to migrant rescue - or else!": Jack Monroe to take Katie Hopkins down?

Katie Hopkins has made an enemy of Jack Monroe - and it could result in a very nasty legal battle...

Controversial TV personality Katie Hopkins is famous for rubbing people up the wrong way.

However she has definitely made a mistake in angering Jack Monroe.

The duo became embroiled in a bitter Twitter row when Katie falsely accused the single mum of vandalising a Woman Of World War II memorial.

She tweeted: "Scrawled on any memorials lately? Vandalised the memory of those who fought for your freedom? Grandma got any more medals?"

Jack, whose father served in the Falklands War and whose brother is in the RAF, replied angrily: "I have NEVER ‘scrawled on a memorial’. Brother in the RAF. Dad was a Para in the Falklands.

"You’re a piece of s**t.”

Furious at the levels of abuse she was receiving online for a crime she did not commit, the food blogger ordered Katie to delete the tweet and issue a public apology.

She also demanded that Katie make a £5,000 donation to a migrant rescue mission, shortly after the former Apprentices contestant cruelly dubbed the thousands of migrants who drowned in a recent crossing to the UK as "cockroaches".

Katie did delete the first tweet, but did not apologise.

Instead, referring to The Guardian's Laurie Penny (who defended the people who actually defaced the war memorial), she wrote: “Can someone explain to me – in 10 words or less – the difference between irritant @PennyRed (Laurie Penny) and social anthrax @MsJackMonroe?”

She then, after insisting the whole Twitter argument was nothing more than a case of mistaken identity, blocked Jack Monroe completely from social media.

Katie has until the end of today to issue Jack with a public apology and make a donation to a migrant charity

After laughing about the irony of being called "social anthrax" by Katie Hopkins - famously dubbed the Most Hated Woman In Britain - Jack has now confirmed that she has referred the matter to her lawyers

She told Huffington Post UK: "Katie sent me a message on Twitter this morning acknowledging she had made a mistake but with no apology.

“The level of abuse she prompted her followers to send after her initial tweet went on for days and the messages I received were obscene and upsetting.

"As she is aware, this is in the hands of my solicitors, so she needs to write to them directly."

She added: "I tried to avoid this course of action by offering her the opportunity to apologise on the night, but she refused, instead using her large platform to encourage further abuse.

"I bear her no ill will and would like to see this matter resolved as quickly and amicably as possible."

Katie Hopkins has until end of play today to issue a public apology and make a donation to Migrant Rescue (a charity of Jack Monroe's choice).

If she does not do so, lawyers will begin libel proceedings.
